Reactions and Reviews
I will admit that the older Kirk and Spock circa ST VI are not my most favorite time to imagine them. The Kirk that bookends this story is feeling the aches and pains of his advancing arthritis and is longing for retirement. Spock, of course, is as gentle and loving as always. He, too, is showing signs of his middle age, though naturally he is less incapacitated than his mate. One night as they prepare to make love, Kirk admonishes his partner not to be so 'nice' this time. And therein lies the tale. The flashback scenes that prompt this remark are well-written and vividly described. I‘m not going to say too much about the plot since this zine is still relatively new, but you Kirk h/c fen out there should enjoy it.
I very much liked how this segued into ST VI. This is a first story from a new writer, and I definitely want to see more from her. [1]
As this story opens, Kirk is a few months from retirement, and still serving with Spock on board the Enterprise. At 60 years old he‘s starting to feel the weight of the years and the punishment his body has been through, but his love for Spock is as strong as ever. The author then takes us back 25 years with an engrossing look at the events that led to Kirk and Spock‘s bonding, and gives us insights into the complex psyche of one James T. Kirk. An assault and attempted kidnapping of Kirk by Orion slavers causes Kirk and Spock to become even closer, both emotionally and mentally, yet it takes Kirk time to heal from the assault, come to terms with what happened, and consummate their relationship. Kirk also has trouble committing to the bonding Spock wants so much. The progression of their relationship in this story is set against interesting details of life on board the Enterprise. This was an intriguing, well written story. [2]
