About

I have been in fandom...um...a LONG time.

I started in SF fandom, found Trek, found Trek fanzines, found (gulp!) K/S zines, found S&H and S/H fanzines, realized that it wasn't Trek anymore, it was media fandom, found The Professionals & Blake's 7, realized I wasn't a media fan but rather a slash fan and then...

The floodgates opened:

Man from U.N.C.L.E., Miami Vice, Wiseguy, Due South, Highlander, X-Files, Xena, The Sentinel, Buffy...and there seems to be no end in sight.

The weird part of all of this is, I don't really watch much T.V. (For example, when I wrote this, it was the first of September '98, and I hadn't turned my T.V on (#) since I watched the Buffy season-ender back in June.)

What does a fannish butterfly do?

Well, I write, but very slowly, about one story a year. Really. All of my current stories are in zines, but as the zines go out of print, I'll be slowly bringing my stories out here.

I go to cons, and I recommend them for all slashfans. Yeah, the net is wonderful, and chat is wonderful, and lists, and roundrobins, and IRC...but nothing beats actually meeting other fans face to face. Worried, because you don't know anyone? You don't have to know people when you get there -- and you'll definitely know people by the time you leave for home.

I make songvids. (That # was to say, I haven't turned my T.V. on except to make (too effing many) copies of our newest tape of songvids. Never heard of songvids (or songtapes, or fannish music vids)? They're another form of fanfic, but they use a song off the radio and clips from the show to tell the story. Think MTV, but instead of babes in leather, we're using our BSO's in action to illustrate the words of the song.

I hang with other fans. Call me strange (if you must) but I don't *get* fans in isolation. The POINT of fandom for me is collaboration and cooperation (yeah, well, and occasional open warfare). This isn't meant as a dig on people who feel differently, but rather a big ole, "Come on in, the water's fine" to fans who don't, so far, have much contact with other fans. My advice: go to conventions, post actively on fannish lists (or at least, notice the people who say the things you agree with, and email them privately), notice email and snail mail addresses -- if someone seems to be local, drop 'em a line, go out for drinks. What's the worst that can happen?
