Cirno is a popular character in Touhou Project fandom. She is an ice fairy who first appeared on the second stage of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. As a fairy, she is exceptionally strong for her kind, matching the power of some weak youkai. However, compared to most of Gensokyo's residents, she's quite weak. Her personality is childish and she is sometimes considered idiotic by other characters. She stars as the main protagonist of Fairy Wars, and one of several protagonists in Hisoutensoku and Hidden Star in Four Seasons.
Due to becoming a meme, Cirno is now one of the most popular characters of Touhou. Many fans now portray her, jokingly or seriously, as a misunderstood child or even as an outright genius in disguise, or as a bumbling idiot who messes up what everyone else is doing.
Cirno is a childish, confident fairy who appears to have a superiority complex in regards to others. She proclaims herself to be "the strongest" on three separate occasions in Phantasmagoria of Flower View. In the game's manual, she is labeled as "9. baka" (⑨. バカ, lit. "9. Idiot") in an explanation of the game screen's layout. She was again labeled as such in the manual for Hisoutensoku. This implies that Cirno may be some kind of idiot, which does seem to be the case on some occasions - in Oriental Sacred Place, she is quite confused as to why nobody wants to buy her water-flavored shaved ice.
Despite this, she is smart enough to know when she is in deep trouble, such as her battle against Kazami Yuuka in Phantasmagoria of Flower View's story mode. She can also read, unlike some of her peers, such as Mystia Lorelei. She can also count (she shows knowledge of rounding and fractions in Fairy Wars).
Among other things, she greatly enjoys using her abilities to freeze frogs, then watch it revive while thawing out in the water. However, about one in every three attempts fails, shattering the frog to pieces. This has earned her a warning from Hakurei Reimu, who cautioned that she could be set upon by Moriya Suwako for her actions.
The date "09-09-09" (Wednesday, September 9, 2009, 09:09:09, more specifically) has been named "Cirno Day" for obvious reasons. For some reason, numerous aspects of this day everything could be translated into or connected with nine. For example: September 9 is the 252nd day of the year and 2 + 5 + 2 = 9, you need 9 letters to type "Wednesday" or "September", and Japan's timezone is +9. Other names for this day include "The Strongest Day" and "⑨ Day".
Relationship with Other Fandoms
In both SiIvaGunner and TimmyTurnersGrandDad, as well as other, smaller fanchannels within the "high quality rips" community, her EOSD theme "Beloved Tomboyish Girl"/"Tomboyish Girl in Love" has been prominently used, either in full or as a leitmotif excerpt, in various rips, most often Touhou-related; events featuring her or her signature number were also held, such as the latter's "Touhou 9/9 Day" on 2023.
