Some Excerpts
Before the show, I wrote off and on - sometimes fiction that went nowhere, sometimes journal writing. When I was fifteen my best friend and I filled a notebook with our glorious story about how we were going to write a best-selling novel. As famous authors, we would catch the eyes of John Taylor from Duran Duran (for her) and George Michael (for me - a step in the wrong direction that cursed me to be attracted to gay men forever). We would all then live on an island together in our two big mansions, squeezing out their pop-rock babies forever and writing best-selling novels as a brilliant and much lauded team. I consider that the true beginning of my fanfic writing career.
Before I knew what fanfic was, I'd watch the show and run possible scenarios through my head to continue story-lines that I liked, change ones that I didn't, etc. So when I discovered fanfic existed, I was amazed that I wasn't a freak! Okay, maybe a freak, but not alone anymore. I'm not sure what made me take the leap from imagining scenarios and reading fanfic to writing it. It just seemed like the thing to do at the time.
I'd been reading fanfic for about a year and had several story ideas that I was mulling over and developing, but was scared, scared, scared to post anything. When "The End" aired, I had an idea for an extremely short little vignette and I wrote it at work in an afternoon. When I got home, I posted the damn thing without even allowing myself to think about it. I had no expectations for it; I just wanted the practice. I think about three people read it, which was fine with me. Just having finished it and posted it was enough to give me the confidence to go on.
I really treasure the friendships I've made in fanfic. Where else am I going to find people who share the exact same obsession as I do? It's also been wonderful to find how many interests we share outside of the show and writing. I've also gained a sense of direction in writing and confidence to consider pursuing it through taking some creative writing courses.
