Charmed is an American television show about three sisters who found out they were witches. The show ran from 1998 to 2006.
Canon
The series follows The Charmed Ones, the most powerful good witches of all time, who use their combined "Power of Three" to protect innocent lives from evil beings such as demons and warlocks. Originally the series followed three sisters, Prue, Piper and Phoebe. After Prue's death at the end of season three, another sister, Paige, was discovered.
In Season 8, Kaley Cuoco appears as Billie Jenkins, a new charge for Paige (as a whitelighter) and young witch who spends most of season trying to find her eldest sister Christy.
Controversy
During season 3, there had been rumors flying around concerning the two actors Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano. While it has been debated what exactly happened between the two of them, the fact remains that Shannen left the show after the season 3 finale and Rose McGowan was brought in as her replacement, playing the (previously unknown) fourth and youngest Halliwell sister Paige Matthews.
Because of this, there was a falling out between the fans of Prue/Shannen and Phoebe/Alyssa. The Shannen fans who continued to watch Charmed banded to support Piper/Holly Marie Combs (mainly due to the fact that Holly and Shannen were best friends in real life) while the Paige/Rose fans were either ignored, disliked by Shannen fans for being the replacement sister, or banded with the Alyssa fans against the Shannen fans.

Pairings
Back in the day, the Charmed Boards (no longer active) was a place that many Charmed fans visited for their fandom needs. Shipping wars and character/sister wars happened frequently in the various forums of the Boards.
The two most popular ships were between canonical couples Piper Halliwell/Leo Wyatt and Phoebe Halliwell/Cole Turner.
Despite the show's main characters being sisters, most fics created while the show was on air would pair them off with their canonical significant others instead of in incestuous relationships with each other like in Supernatural. Incest and Real Person fics were shunned by many fans on Charmed Boards and FFN. However, sibling incest fic must have existed by 2000 because it was mentioned on femslash mailing lists[1]. When the character Chris Perry appeared in the sisters' lives at the end of Season 5, the pairing Chris/Piper appeared in the fandom although it was a rarepair, which was later revealed to be incest due to Chris being revealed as the youngest son of Piper and Leo that traveled back from a dark future to save his family.
Other parings include Prue Halliwell/Andy Trudeau, canonical in Season 1, Dan Gordon/Piper Halliwell, canonical in Season 2, Paige Matthews/Henry Mitchell and Phoebe Halliwell/Coop both canonical in season 8. The slash and incestuous pairing of brothers Chris Halliwell/Wyatt Halliwell can also be found.
