Charlotte is the main character and, originally, the creator's self-insert character in the TikTok series, The Nursery Nurse. Like every other character in the series, she is played by the series creator, Charlotte, and is the character who was, at least at first, drawing most from Charlotte's personal experiences working as a nursery nurse.

Originally, when the series was almost exclusively skits, Charlotte was the only point of view character in the series, with most videos being of her interacting with parents or difficult staff. While the introduction of story-lines and other main characters means Charlotte is no longer the only character that the viewers see events from the POV of, she remains the key character through which people relate to and see the canonical world.

As the series has grown significantly, creator Charlotte has stated that the character of Charlotte has moved away from her own experiences in many ways. These statements have not stopped some fans of the series from speculating about whether elements of the character are reflections of Charlotte's real life.

Character Overview

Charlotte is a nursery nurse (also called an early years practitioner) based in a fictional UK nursery. For a long time, she was the only main character of the series, and remains one of the main characters now the series has a much larger set of characters. In the earlier years of the series, Charlotte was primarily involved in one-shot skits with either parents of children or other staff members, meaning there was minimal backstory at this time.

As the series grew, more details were provided for all the characters; Charlotte was revealed to be married and to have two children with her family and her home becoming referenced more often but unseen. Platonic relationships between Charlotte and other characters were established, with her becoming close friends with manager, Marjorie, once the latter underwent a redemption arc and became a permanent main character.

As longer and more serious story-lines developed in 2024, a significant story-line for Charlotte occurred where she developed an attraction towards at-the-time antagonist, Mia, clashed with Marjorie, and revealed that her marriage had ended some months previously, leading to struggles with her mental health. At the resolution of that arc, Charlotte and Mia became a couple, which became a controversial story-line for some fans and led to controversy within the fandom.

Fandom

History and Overview

As the primary character through which the fandom saw The Nursery Nurse universe, Charlotte has been a popular character for the fandom for some time. Fans who have also worked in early years education relate to many of the portrayals in the skits and with how Charlotte interacted with parents and other staff members.

Originally, fan discussions were almost entirely contained on TikTok or Facebook in the comments sections of each video; in 2023 and, particularly, 2024, these discussions spread to other social media platforms, including Twitter and Tumblr. Fanworks began to appear on Tumblr, Wattpad, and Archive of Our Own; Charlotte is one of the most commonly included characters in these fanworks, particularly as one half of the Mialotte pairing.

While Charlotte remains a very popular character, there are some controversies amongst some parts of the fandom around her characterisation and the way in which small parts of the fandom overstep boundaries with the creator.

Charlotte's relationship with Mia was a source of a lot of discourse within the fandom. Mia was originally written solely as a villain character and it was pressure from the fans which ultimately led to Mia becoming a permanent character and the Mia/Charlotte relationship developing. However, as Mia had been written as a fairly one-note antagonist, she had to be redeemed, particularly as consistency within the story-lines was also becoming prevalent at the same time in the series.

Some fans were unhappy with the redemption arc, discussing how it wasn't as much a redemption arc as a slightly sympathetic backstory. As a result, they didn't like Charlotte entering into a relationship with a character who had previously done things such as withholding medication from a child, risking his life; they felt it was very out of character for the Charlotte who had been established to date.

Some fans also seem to have overstepped boundaries with the creator, believing that the changes to Charlotte's character are reflective of the creator herself. This has led to acts such as some fans looking for her personal social media and discussing how often, or not, she discusses her partner or posts pictures of him. Some fans of the series have discussed concerns of parasocialism within the fandom, due to the poor boundaries between TikTok creators and their fans.

Common Pairings

Charlotte/Mia is the most common pairing in both discussions and fanworks for Charlotte's character, though a small number of discussions and works exist for other pairings, such as Charlotte/Marjorie. Platonic pairings with various characters in the series are relatively common in fanworks, and are very popular in discussions on the videos.

As with all The Nursery Nurse pairings, there is a lot of discussion about the confusion or amusement caused by the fact that all the pairings are essentially pairing one woman with herself.
