Common Tropes in Fanworks

Transgender themes: Charlie's character arc is themed around transformation and symbolized by a name change, which has led many fans to headcanon him as transgender or nonbinary. He is generally more flamboyant and sometimes depicted as dressing femininely or doing drag.

Expulsion: Charlie is expelled at the end of the movie for violence and disrespect. Some fans, particularly those writing either post-death or nobody dies stories, prefer to ignore this.

Good Friend: Charlie is a frequent supporting character in Neil/Todd fic and often written as a wingman or an encouraging figure to help in their relationship. Sometimes, this incorporates the fact that he was friends with Neil before the movie started (and, to some fans, that they are exes).

Nuwanda Controversy

The name Nuwanda is frequently criticized for appropriating indigenous cultures. A number of similarly racist elements are present in the movie as well. The name Nuwanda appears to have been chosen as a continuation of that, as Charlie reinvents himself into someone his parents would hate.[1]
