Reactions and Reviews

Appreciating this story requires a serious suspension of disbelief, since carnivals on a Federation starship are not too typical. Nor are Tunnels of Love. I worried about what it looked like, how the crew had constructed it so quickly, how McCoy had managed to program it to his own devices. However, once over that hurdle, I did appreciate Carnival Night, mostly for the great dialogue between Spock and McCoy. [1]

This story was cute, with a number of great exchanges between Spock and McCoy. I did find myself wondering just where the event took place. The hanger deck, I would assume, but the author never says, and I wonder if even that area would have been too small for all the activities mentioned. I liked the original ending much better than the alternate. [2]

I was a bit put off at first by the premise. A carnival on the Enterprise, nah. However, the story soon won me over I was surprised and charmed. There was some really sharp dialogue that captured the characters well I could actually hear Kirk and Spock saying those lines. Although the premise was not realistic, the actions and reactions of the characters was. At the end of the story there was a neat and funny turn-about on McCoy. [3]

This story is about 11 pages of silliness and I can’t really say that it worked for me. Parts of it were cute, and parts were just too over the top. Humor is hard to do. We’ve got to remember that the NCC-1701 doesn’t have a holodeck as the later NEXT GEN ones do. This story has two endings, and I preferred the first one. I think the story would be better without the second two page ending entirely. The best part is the very first four pages which start off with Spock “pulling McCoy’s leg”. The conversation is delightful. [4]

Really cute short story of Kirk, Spock and McCoy and a carnival on the Enterprise. My favorite funny: “Cha’lezi—a Vulcan term literally meaning wet noodle.” And I loved: “You have to choose a prize.” A prize is not necessary, Mister Sulu. This was an exercise in assessing probabilities. The solution is its own reward.” “Pick a prize, Spock,” Kirk said quietly. [5]
