Cardcaptor Torika is a fanmade comic based on Cardcaptor Sakura.

Plot summary

It takes its basis from Cardcaptors despite its western naming of characters, and how the events play out. Unlike the dub, it explicitly sets Reedington in Tokyo. It is set many years after the CCS\CC with Sakura in a coma, unable to awaken because the Star Cards are drawing too much power from her for their own survival. Sakura's daughter, Torika, is awoken one night to strange music coming from a trunk that was off limits to her. Inside, there were several of Sakura's battle costumes and the Sakura book (AKA The star book). In a similar way to Sakura, she opens the book to find the Star cards inside, accidentally speaking out the fire card's name, causing a fire that throws all the cards out. Kero then appears, telling her she must reseal the cards or else her mother would die. She becomes the Cardcaptor as a result.

Development

The series is 80 issues long, divided into 3 seasons, "Star Cards", "Heart Cards" and "The Emperor of Nightmares". There is also a prologue comic "Stories from the Sakura Book" released before the third season which is set between the original time line and a few years before the "Star Cards" season. More recently, "Stories from the Torika Book" adds a few filler stories, though these are fanfiction and not comics.

Initial design began in 2001 as a fanfiction project, which did not involve Torika at all. The first comic was developed in 2002 but was never released since it was subpar by the author's standards. In September 2003, she released her second version of the comic online, each issue containing 2 episodes. It was originally developed with just pencils, with text later added digitally. By Issue 5 of "Star Cards", a digital logo was created for the series. By Issue 10, the drawings were digitally toned and the text bubbles were digitally added in rather than drawn in.

Originally, "The Emperor of Nightmares" was going to be a crossover with Sailor Moon, but this was scrapped, though the new items originally drawn for the crossover was retained. Also the number of episodes per issue was dropped to 1 but more pages were made per episode.

Also as part of promoting "The Emperor of Nightmares" two special sets of character cards (Similar to the ones done in CCS) and Moon cards were developed as a gift for voting the comic on two topsites.

Characters

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

Torika Showron - Daughter of Sakura (Avalon) Showron and Li Showron. She is as sweet and optimistic, yet klutzy like Sakura. And is just as stubborn yet temperamental as Li. In a similar way to Sakura, she opens the book to find the Star cards inside, accidentally speaking out the fire cards name, causing a fire that throws all the cards out. Kero then appears, telling her she must reseal the cards or else her mother would die. She becomes the Cardcaptor as a result. She has martial arts training from her father and is just as good as her mother on sports.

Kero - Torika's mentor reprising his original role. He has the same personalty as before and can change into his true form as well

Maddy Greening - Daughter of Madison (Taylor) Greening and Kurogane Greening. She bears similarities to Madison in her personalty (Though slightly more devious and strange than her mother) and appearance (Since she is more or less like her Madison). She is the first to discover Torika's secret and helps her out. Like Madison, she also produces most of the battle costumes used. She dreams of being a fashion designer like her mother. She is extremely close to her brother Tai, even when knowing its nothing more than a illusionary form. Like her mother she has no magical powers yet in "Emperor of Nightmares" she gains magical powers in her dreams.

Tai Greening - Son of Madison (Taylor) Greening and Kurogane Greening. Like Madison and Maddy she bears similarities in personality, though he is more polite and supportive compared to Maddy. He is supportive of Maddy doing most of the things for her, which usually goes into embarrassment. He is the illusionary form of Yue, and does not become aware of this until after Heart Cards. He is also a talented musician.

Natsume Fushigi - Daughter of a Toy maker and a socialite. She appears at first as Torika's rival in a similar fashion to Li in CCS\CC. She inherits her magical abilities from her father, (who is wary of the Showron family), however unlike Li this is completely unrelated to the Clow dynasty. She becomes more friendly to Torika in Chapter 16 of the "Star Cards" season, and also later on develops a crush for Tai. In Chapter 37 of the "Star Cards" she leaves with her family for Hawaii. Making a return for one chapter in "Heart Cards" and then for the entire season in "Emperor of Nightmares", in both instances improving her magic. All her magic is based on a bow which is summoned from a amulet she wears around her neck.
