Captain Tsubasa is a popular Japanese manga and anime series created by Yōichi Takahashi. It focuses on the sport of football (soccer) and follows the adventures of a young football prodigy named Tsubasa Oozora.

In Spain, the series was renamed "Campeones" (Champions) and the names of the characters were westernized.

Fandom

Fans have humorously pointed out and made fun of the seemingly exaggerated size of the football fields in Captain Tsubasa. This is one of the series' most iconic and often parodied elements. In the anime and manga, the football fields sometimes appear to be incredibly vast, so much so that the goalposts are not visible on the horizon from one end of the field. This exaggeration is part of the series' stylistic approach to heighten the drama and excitement of the matches.

Another of the quirk of the series are over-the-top, acrobatic football moves that defy real-world physics. For example, the Tachibana twins, Masao and Kazuo Tachibana, known for their acrobatic and synchronized techniques. These twin brothers are famous for performing spectacular and impossible moves, like jumping on top of the goalpost, or when one of the brothers throws his back on the lawn and the other jumps on his cleats and is catapulted high into the air.

Most of the early fanfiction in the western fandom were in Spanish, French or Italian, places where this series was most successful.

Yaoi Boom

In Japan in mid 80s the series success among female fans made it one of the most popular series in Comiket from 1986 onward, along with Saint Seiya and Yoroiden Samurai Troopers.[1] The amateur comics centered on homosexual romantic relationships between characters. It made the Comiket attendance double from previous years and the demographics shift toward young otaku girls. Some of these amateur creators were later hired as professional mangakas, as the popularity and demand of yaoi manga increased[2], like CLAMP who originally were a doujinshi circle and Minami Ozaki, creator of Zetsuai/Bronze.
