Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (often just called Captain Scarlet) is a British science fiction Supermarionation tv series produced with marionettes. A 2005 reboot used CGI animation. In 2068 Scarlet (real name Paul Metcalfe) and other characters are members of Spectrum, Earth's defensive organisation. In the pilot episode fellow-agent Captain Black is leader of an expedition to Mars. They are seen exploring by the Mysterons, natives of Mars, and Black mistakes an attempt at peaceful contact for an attack and fires on the Mysteron city, destroying it. The Mysterons use their powers of "retro-animation" to rebuild it, but swear revenge for the unprovoked attack. After the expedition returns to Earth the Mysterons use their powers to crash a car containing Black and Scarlet, killing them both, them retro-metabolise them as Mysteron agents. As such they are virtually unkillable. They eventually lose control of Scarlet but retain Black as their agent on Earth, and launch a series of attacks using retro-metabolised saboteurs, vehicles, etc. as well as assassination and bombs.

The series featured several colour-coded agents, a group of female pilots, the Angels, with musical code-names (Melody, Harmony, etc.), and various land vehicles and aircraft including a flying aircraft carrier, Cloudbase.

Since this was a children's programme, though darker in tone than many, there are no real canon ships.

Because of the character's immortality and rank there are obvious parallels between Captain Scarlet and Jack Harkness (Torchwood) and there have been several vids using the Captain Scarlet title music for footage of Harkness.
