A canon rewrite is a fanfic that largely retreads the events of canon, but does so in a unique manner or with limited changes. For example, it may retell the events of canon from the POV of a supporting character, such as re-writing the Harry Potter series from Hermione or Draco's perspective. It may also reimagine the story with specific elements added or changed, such as letting a doomed character live, genderswapping the protagonist, or setting it in a universe with Alpha/Beta/Omega dynamics while largely following canonical events. The distinction between canon rewrites and AUs, fix-its, and denialfic can thus be somewhat murky.
