Reactions and Reviews
The other short piece, DAWN'S LIGHT by Allison Reed, is again, very heart warming, and involves Kirk's mother's initial realization of Kirk and Spock's relationship. [1]
A beautiful story that says so much in two pages. Kirk's mother gets home a week early, thinking to surprise her son who is staying at their farm on leave. It's early morning, and as she thinks about her son, his life and the loneliness of it, she peeks into his room and sees him still asleep. The following lines paint a picture that doesn't get any better."Nestled snugly against his back, one long, lean- muscled arm draped protectively over the smooth broad chest, was one of the most handsome men she'd ever seem. The raven-haired Vulcan stirred slightly as she watched, pulling his companion ever closer, burrowing his tousled dark head lovinglyagainst the sturdy neck."
The only thing that could make the story better, would be for it to continue.[2]
I always enjoy an Addison Reed story and this page and a half delight is my favorite. Back in the before time[3], when I was in one a handful of professional writing programs for nonjournalists, I very quickly came to know that the ten page or less short story is the hands down, most difficult form of prose to master. To cram an interesting beginning, middle and end into a smooth, well developed storyline is character building, or ego deflating depending upon how you reflect on the experience. So it’s with the utmost respect that I suggest you read, or reread, this short story. It works beautifully. By Dawn’s Light is told from the viewpoint of Kirk’s mother as she returns home early to surprise a cherished son home. Reed weaves a clear picture of a charming, high spirited, ambitious young man yearning for a life in space and a proud mother’s awe at his accomplishments, difficulty reconciling her boy with the man of power he has become and worry that her lonely son needs yet has not been able to make a lasting romantic connection. Ellen arrives home at dawn, thinks to wake her son then decides to let him sleep instead. A fluttering curtain draws her attention to her sleeping son and the dark-haired companion snuggled against him. Reed’s final line, “Mothers worry too much”, is exquisite.[4]
A mother reminiscing over her golden-haired son. Her worry and sadness is because he is so very much alone and can’t seem to find the companion he needs. Then she sees her son, sleeping in the arms of one of the most handsome men she ever laid eyes on, pulling him even closer, loving him even in sleep. “Mothers,” she smiled as she tripped lightly down the stairs, “worry too much.” Beautiful tableau.
