Bowlgate is the term used by Critical Role fans to refer to a series of online arguments regarding an in-game situation that unfolded in the 22nd episode of Campaign 2.
The cast is aware of the fannish name for the event and have referenced it in their after-game talk show programs.[1]
Summary
The debate centered on a conflict between player characters Caleb Widogast and Beauregard Lionett on how to deal with a bowl-shaped artifact brought to the campaign's attention by a guest character, Calianna. The artifact in question has some potentially sinister uses, and Calianna states that she wishes to destroy it. Beauregard takes her at her word, but Caleb is suspicious, and the two have an argument over the proper course of action.[2]
Debate of the topic quickly grew from a discussion of in-game actions to critiques of the participants as players and speculation about which player was most responsible for the conflict.[3]
