Borderlands is series of action role-playing first-person shooter video games in a space western/science fantasy setting that was developed by Gearbox Software for multiple gaming platforms.

Another planned spin-off game, Borderlands Online, began development in 2014 but was never released.[1]
A mini comic book non-canon series was released as Borderlands: Origins in November 2012 published by IDW. Pocket Books published three Borderlands novels by John Shirley, covering Roland and Mordecai's origins and their adventures after the events of Borderlands:

- Borderlands: Unconquered (25 September 2012)
- Borderlands: Gunsight (1 October 2013)
A film adaptation of the game is due to be released in 2024; news of the adaptation was first discussed when initial talks took place in 2015.

The fandom was originally situated predominantly on FanFiction.net with over 900 works compared to Archive of Our Own which had just over 200 as of May 2015[2]. However, the amount of fanfiction on Archive of Our Own greatly increased late 2015 with the release of the final episodes of the spin off Tales from the Borderlands. Currently, the fandom is spread rather evenly between Fanfiction.net and Archive of Our Own, with the former having just over 1,100 works and the latter having over 1,300[3]. Fans mainly post their fanart to DeviantART and Tumblr.
