Reactions and Reviews
1993
An intriguing story. There is transporter trouble and Kirk is very worried and nervous until Spock comes back. When he does come back, he is laughing, puts his arm around Kirk— he came back human! Then the Vulcan Spock comes back. The portrayal of both Spocks being at ease with each other was done really well.
The process of Kirk realizing he is most drawn to the Vulcan Spock. even though the human Spock might have a very charged appeal, is very interesting. Human Spock is the one who almost rapes Kirk: Vulcan Spock the one who rescues. The Spocks finally come back into one body. But then the sex between Kirk and the now integrated Spock/s seemed too fast, after how almost-shy they had been with each other.
A good and subtle exploration of the human/Vulcan dichotomy. [1]

Another split by the transporter, but this time it's Spock who's torn into two, a Vulcan and a Human. There are one or two other stories with this plot, but what makes this one different is the Spock characterizations. Usually the Vulcan Spock is totally cold and unreachable, while the Human Spock is warm and outgoing, and it is to this one that Kirk relates to. Not so in this story. Here, the Vulcan is displaced, seems remote, but its only because the Human portion of him is gone, which was apparently the half that Spock used to reach out to Kirk and others. His pain at being so locked up in himself is very real, and very distressing to Kirk. He's drawn to the Vulcan more than the Human. Which is good, anyway, because the Human Spock is something of an arrogant bastard. Not that it's his fault; it's because he has no control over what he feels, and can't deal with his totally Human drives and emotions. He is just as lost as the Vulcan, perhaps more so, because he really does not seem at all like Spock.
Also, Spock's memories were split as well, so neither really remembers Spock's relationship with Kirk. And poor Kirk cant help feeling torn between them. Eventually Spock is put back together and remembers everything. Kirk confronts him about the way both his halves seemed to fed about him, and the truth is out.
The sex is good, the ending is happy, and all together a good read.[2]

The story "Beside Myself III" also has a subtitle which I don't understand. It is "Devil Take the Hand Most." I feel stupid that I don't know what it means, but I don't. Now that I've read the story I am amazed that someone has not written this plot before. Maybe they have but I don't remember reading it. (My memory does suck to high heaven.) In this story a transporter malfunction separates Spock into two people: a total Vulcan Spock and a total human Spock. The story is really interesting, and it is my favorite story of the entire zine. This, despite poor proofing, was worth the rest of the zine. A transporter accident splits Spock into his human and Vulcan halves, and Kirk discovers it's the Vulcan side he likes better, though it's the human side who has a crush on him. A fun idea, well executed. [4]
