Reactions and Reviews

1989

Nice premise, that contact between the two Kirks makes them feel more "normal". There was just the right amount of hesitation on the meek Kirk's part and forcefulness on the other, and the rapport between them was fitting, as one should be able to "know oneself". Because of the gorgeous illustration on the back cover I'd hoped that Spock would get into the act (literally), but maybe it was more effective that they were left looking forward to things to come. [1]

I think the most poignant thing about this story is that its premise was so perfectly logical. The episode "The Enemy Within" made it quite clear that both Kirks were stronger when they were near each other, so 'joining' with each other (though they didn't go quite that far in the story) would be beneficial to their mutual health.

This story was very erotic, especially when Spock seemed so turned on (in a restrained manner) by the two. In some ways, I was disappointed that the story didn't do more with the idea of the two Kirks making love to each other; but maybe it's for the best that 'what could have been' is left to the reader's imagination.

I really liked the dialogue between the two Kirks, and I think the author did an excellent job of consistently pointing out how they were 'the same, but different'. [2]
