BARELY BLUE is one of the few stories about "Wink Of An Eye" I've ever read. Very interesting idea. The plot takes place after Deela Is gone, leaving Spock still excellerated and unable to "slow down". McCoy searches for an antidote and Kirk excellerates too be with Spock. Well written with its different approach. What I've come to expect from Ms. Hood- Too bad there wasn't an illo. Seems like there should have been one. [1]

Basically, I liked this story. I do, however, have a quibble that threw off my concentration and, therefore, my enjoyment of it. When Spock first injects himself with the formula to return him to the slower time, he and Kirk sit waiting for over an hour for it to work. Then, after injecting Kirk with the antidote, Spock says, "...if my calculations are correct, sometime tomorrow night...". There was no hint of when those calculations were made. In his head? On the computer when it seemed it wouldn't work? Before he tried the shot? A small thing, but it jarred me back to reality. [2]

Very well plotted, this account of Spock’s failure to decelerate after “Wink of an Eye” might well have made the episode a memorable one. I enjoyed the honest way in which the two men acknowledged their importance to each other.Kirk, however, cannot remain with Spock in acceleration—he will die, and Spock refuses to allow that. So Kirk is left to wait a tormented 19 hours not knowing if Spock’s newly concocted antidote will bring him back.
Interesting that Spock promises to be in Kirk’s cabin when the deceleration is scheduled to occur—if it works. Kirk is pondering Spock’s fate: alone and dying among a ship full of people. Slowly he begins to perceive something “barely blue” begin to materialize at the foot of his bed...Spock! I’ll bet you can guess how it ends, considering the location of Spock’s reappearance, how “happy” Kirk is to see him, etc., etc. [3]
