Leaking of "The Promise: Part 1"

Early in November 2011, an Avatar fan who had obtained an advance copy of the comic's first issue[1] posted a handful of images and some information from the much-awaited issue to a closed community and later to her Tumblr account.[2] About a week later, online store Amazon enabled its "look inside" feature[3] for the first issue of The Promise, which was available for pre-order from the site.[4] Numerous Avatar fans used the feature to view a limited number of preview pages, saved the pages they had seen, and began to puzzle together the entire issue by matching the pages together and reconstructing the possible order of the scenes. By November 16, 2011, they had reassembled nearly the entire story on Tumblr.[5] Finally, on December 28, 2011, a full scan of the first issue was published on 4chan.[6]

Reception and sales

The Promise was received with enthusiasm by many Avatar fans and appears to be selling well, as Dark Horse announced that "The Promise: Part 1" had "soared to the top of the Bookscan charts" two weeks after its release.[7]

Some fans were unsatisfied by the way the conflicts were handled, however. Many Zuko fans were horrified that Zuko would go to Ozai for advice, and Mai/Zuko fans wept at their second breakup. Others felt the actions of other characters contradicted the show.

Zuko/Katara fandom's bitterness towards Aang/Katara grew stronger due to the pronounced affection between the latter pair.
