An audiobook is a sound recording of someone reading a text out loud, usually a commercially published work. Some are narrated by their author; others feature one or more professional actors. Unlike an audio drama, there is usually no music or sound effects accompanying the narration.
People may prefer audiobooks for a variety of reasons, such as being in a situation where reading a printed book may not be convenient (i.e. while driving).
As a Fan Activity
Fans have recorded themselves reading aloud published books, fanzines, and fanfiction. In the past, some of these efforts were intended as a service to visually impaired fans, but many do it just as a fun creative project.
