Ascension is a Merlin/Arthur story by myashke. It was written for furloughday for the merry_merthur gift exchange.
Summary: "Faced with the harsh reality of another attack on his father, Arthur sets out to complete the Rites of Ascension alone and unaided, but, as he and Merlin discover, he was never meant to succeed alone." Spoilers and canon-related for everything up to 3x12.
The story features angst followed by first time sex magic in the form of bonding.

SOUL-BONDING. YESSSSSS. Plus many many words of Merlin pining for Arthur, and Arthur being surprisingly smart and Knowing Things. Arthur and Merlin spend a fair bit of time being emotionally clueless in this story, even at moments where they should catch on. Silly boys.[1]
I like this fic because you can really feel Merlin's longing and uncertainty all the way through, he doesn't think his feelings for Arthur can ever be returned. Arthur's all concerned with duty and doing the right thing and the strain begins to show. It's a good combination of angst, plot, sex, romance and destiny.[2]
I absolutely loved this fic! The banter and humor mixed in with the pining from both Merlin and Arthur was wonderful. It made for a great magic reveal as well. Which, rather than being on the angsty side, was full of an understanding, albeit a little bit hurt, Arthur. It’s a great fic.[3]
