Aquarius Camus is the Gold Saint of Aquarius in the Saint Seiya series.

He first appears in Libra's house, where he scolds his student Cygnus Hyoga for not being strong and detached enough and locks him in an ice coffin. He is later in the series defeated by Hyoga and dies having fulfilled his mission to test his strength and get the student to surpass the teacher. Camus later appears temporarily revived and supposedly fighting for Hades. He is also featured in other spin-offs like "Episode G" or "Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold", where a little more is learned about his backstory.

Fandom

Camus is generally a popular character and loved by the fandom. He is especially popular in the French fandom as it is mentioned that he comes from France, even though he grew up in Russia. One of the things Saint Seiya fans like about him is his cold, serious and distant attitude. In the Spanish-speaking fandom, fans have given Camus the nickname "cubito de hielo" (ice cube).

However, the way Camus handled the issue of Hyoga and his refusal to let go of the burdens of his past generates mixed opinions. Some fans think that Camus was hypocritical there, reproaching his student that she would never get stronger by being so sentimental and, at the same time, being sentimental himself. While others say that this is precisely what makes it interesting and human.

The abrupt change in Camus personality in the spin-off Soul of Gold also generated a lot of negative opinions from fans, with a near unanimous opinion that he was out of character.

When it comes to shipping, Camus is almost exclusively shipped with Milo. Aquarius Camus/Scorpio Milo is in fact the most popular in the fandom, with over 500 stories of them in AO3. All other ships with Camus have less than 20 stories and are considered rarepairs. Camus het ships are extremely rare and usually involve the female version of Milo from the movie "Legend of the Sanctuary", an OC or Natassia (Hyoga's mother).

Common Themes

  • Bookworm!Camus: A common fan heacanon is that Camus has a large library and likes reading and collecting books. This may be because, since the etymology of his name comes from a well-known philosopher (Albert Camus), there is a tendency to give him intellectual hobbies. Some fanartists draw him with glasses.
  • French-typical elements: Camus is from France. It's common for fanworks to have dialogue in French from time to time, or to see him doing things like making coffee with a French press or eating a macaron.
  • Resurrection: This is applicable to any character that dies in the series.
  • Reincarnation: Since Aquarius Dégel from Saint Seiya: Lost Canvas physically resembles him so much, fans have the headcanon that he is a reincarnation of Camus. Dégel is also friends with Scorpio Kardia, the LC equivalent of Milo, which adds more "evidence" to this.
