Reaction and Popularity

In an ASCII Media Works poll, Aqua was voted as the twelfth most popular video game character from 2010.[1] In a Famitsu poll from 2011, Aqua was voted as the fourth most popular Kingdom Hearts character.[2] According to a 2017 Famitsu Weekly feature covering Kingdom Hearts' fifteenth anniversary, Aqua was voted first in a popularity poll of ten female characters, with 397 votes.[3]

Criticized for being ineffectual and blind to the red flags raised by the behaviors of her master and friends.

Tropes and Fanon

Fan crators have speculated on Aqua's ten years trapped in the Realm of Darkness. Dark Aqua (or "Darqua") has been a popular fanon, even before KHIII.

Hysterical cries of "AQUA GOT NORTED!" became something of a meme when trailers for Kingdom Hearts III showed that Aqua had apparently been possessed by Xehanort by the time Riku and Mickey find her in the Realm of Darkness.[4]
