Reactions and Reviews
1990
I liked this story -- in an uncomfortable way, considering the entire suppressive scenario -- but it needed to be completed. Even without the last few paragraphs, the story would have needed to be longer to reach a meaningful. satisfying conclusion. As was, the last few paragraphs indicate that Mirror Spock has some sort of psychological need to transfer to alternate universes to suffer hardship. If that's the case, the ending was only a beginning because it opens up a whole new can of worms that needed addressed. If that's not what the ending was trying to say, then I missed the point.
The novella in general had a strong sense of atmosphere and good characterizations. It all felt very real and I admire the author for being able to depict such a strong sense of time and place. [1]

This story was not a combo of the USS and the ISS. It was all ISS... and brutal, especially the first rape of the young Vulcan. I was amazed to find he was expected to respond to Kirk's advances in a matter of days. Incest, child rejection, child rape as well as a mystery formed the plot. It was different. [3]
