Reactions and Reviews
Maybe this is pre-K/S; it is certainly the stuff of which our first K/S dreams were made, written by a great team of the h/c persuasion. Yes, it's an old premise—Spock kidnapped and held for ransom. Kirk shows the determination that we know is spurred by love. He finds his friend, only to be re-captured along with the Vulcan and they are both drawn into a revolution. All the telltale signs of love are there: Kirk noticing the lack of luster in Spock's once shiny hair, grasping the unconscious man's cold hand in his own. A beautiful moment occurs when their love is seen through the eyes of a child. The youngster's mother is the leader of the revolution, so she has seen much of death. It's unsurprising that's what is on her mind when she walks into the room where Spock is fighting for his life, Kirk at his side. She asks Kirk matter of factly if he will be sad when Spock dies. Kirk's response speaks volumes. "If I ever lost Spock, I don't think I'd want to live. There wouldn't be much point in it, he's so much a part of me." The little girl, far too wise for her years, whispers, "It hurts." "It hurts like hell," Kirk says softly. Unbeknownst to him, the seemingly unconscious Vulcan hears this very clear declaration of love and finds within it the strength to live. Later, he gathers even more strength, enough to locate Kirk when the human is also injured. I love the way the author describes the gold and silver threads of the link that draws Spock to him like a beacon.
After the inevitable rescue, the story ends very innocently by K/S standards, with a handclasp as the two are recovering side by side in Sickbay. Nevertheless, this is the stuff of legends, the simple telling of an extraordinary love that cannot be hidden. The whole story glows with it. It was through words like this that K/S was born. [1]
