Anarchy in the UK is a novel-length X-Men: First Class fanfic by Yahtzee written in 2013. Charles/Erik is the main pairing, with background Moira/Sean. Yahtzee's summary reads Charles lives in the unceasing glare of the public spotlight, yet keeps his sexual orientation a closely held secret, afraid he could lose his throne and force his deeply troubled younger sister into a role that would crush her. Erik, journalist and world traveler, has been a loner most of his life; he has little patience for closet cases. But a chance meeting in Kenya brings these two opposites together and sets in motion a love affair that will challenge the British monarchy -- and force them both to change forever. Yahtzee also wrote a coda, Born to Rule (an Anarchy in the UK coda) inspired by the real-life birth of the son of Prince William and Catherine, Duke & Duchess of Cambridge.
Titled, of course, after the Sex Pistols song.
The author later filed off the serial numbers and self-published the story as original fiction.[1] The work remains on AO3, but in an unrevealed collection.
Reviews
[S]pectacular attention to detail and plot. (luninosity)[2]
This fic was absolutely everything I've ever wanted. Despite the 160K+ length, it is super tightly written with lots of proper relationship development, conflict and general awesomeness. Hit every button I have. (slash-recs)[3]
Yesterday I started to read this fic. It was 7 pm and I thought, okay, I read one or two chapters and then I will get ready for my bed. I need to work tomorrow. One chapter became two chapters. Two became three and then I started to say things like ‘Only one more chapter. I need to know what will happen with Raven.’After this chapter I will go to bed.
Around half past three in the morning I finally stood up and went to bed.
I’m tired as fuck but I finished this fic and this fic is so worth to lose sleep. No regrets. ♥ (lillian-raven)[4]
HRRRRRRRRRRRNG. I cannot put this down, to the point that it interfered with a family social gathering but I had to read the latest update, ok, it was vital. Updates exactly once a week, usually on Tuesdays :) It’s become like a coffee fix - the longer a Tuesday goes on before I get an update, the more volatile I become. Last week it updated on a Wednesday and I was not a friendly person to be around, let’s just say. It’s good escapist fic. (malaptica)[5]
This is my go-to Cherik fic to reread even though it’s massively long - it never feels like it’s long enough. Spot-on characterization, amazingly detailed, and so realistic that I’m always a little confused when I realize that Charles is not in fact the Prince of Wales. Also great fleshing out of side characters.[6]
