On 1 September 2012, greerwatson (a member of the maryrenaultfics LiveJournal community) posted a challenge to write a story based on the prompt "apple".
Background
For several years previously, the moderators of the community (my_cnnr and trueriver) had posted a story challenge during the summer. However, in both 2011 and 2012, their activity during the summer had been limited; and, in 2012 particularly, the community had been extremely quiet in July and August. No prompt had been posted.
It was in concern over the quietness of the comm that one of the members decided to post a prompt herself in order to get things moving again.
Challenge
A year ago, our mods returned from holiday to bestow upon us an unexpected story prompt.Happy days are here again!
School is back for the fall term, apples are polished for teacher, pencils are sharp....
Okay, there's something anachronistic about sharp pencils these days. However, when Renault was writing, a sharp pencil (or a freshly filled pen) were necessities of authorship. And authorship is what this is all about. The summer drought is over. Let the fanfic reign!
