Alanna of Pirate's Swoop and Olau, also known as Alanna the Lioness is the main character of Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness series. She dons the disguise of a man (named Alan), swapping places with her twin brother Thom of Trebond to pursue knight training under the name of Alan.

Gender Identity

  • While Alanna is written to be a woman throughout the series, fans have often head-cannoned the character as trans or genderqueer in some way. As she presents as a man early in the series and is shown binding, she often reflects the experiences of young transmascs.
  • Pierce, the author, later apocryphally confirmed that she viewed the character as gender-fluid[1]

Alanna has always defied labels. She took the best bits of being a woman and a man, and created her own unique identity. I think the term is 'gender-fluid', though there wasn't a word for this (to my knowledge) when I was writing her.
