Reactions and Reviews
This is a first time story which occurs immediately after 'Turnabout Intruder". There is a certain sense of reality involved as the ship is called to help a planet stricken with a medical emergency, and McCoy worries about how Kirk is reacting to the transference with Lester. Lester is still in custody on the Enterprise, and her actions on the ship at the end of the story seea to me to be the weakest part of the plot. Her ability to 'trick' a security guard may have advanced the action, but it didn't seem very real to me. Let's give Security more credit. Otherwise, scenes between Kirk and Spock seem to be loving and genuine, I especially liked the whole sunburned routine which eventually leads to McCoy discovering the relationship only hours after it started. But this leads ae to my major complaint about the story. Several things seemed forced about it. Would McCoy really be that concerned about a little sunburn? Would Kirk really throw snowballs all over the transporter room? Would a security guard really be so gullible and careless? I like this story a lot, and reread it occasionally, so obviously my objections do not prevent my enjoying the story. But one of my pet peeves is "reality", and I dislike it when an author forces me to suspend reality to advance the plot. This is a good long read and I recommend it. [1]
This story is so long that that editor printed it in smaller type than the rest of the zine, a slightly annoying fact, but one I easily found I could live with considering the story. This is a complicated plot that deals with Kirk's nightmares after Janice Lester. A day's leave from the ship, some expected discoveries between Kirk and Spock, and some last minute dramatics make for an engrossing, entertaining, loving story. [2]
