Summary
"Kirk and Spock read while in a tree."
Reactions and Reviews
In contrast to the rather dark theme of the previous story [in this zine: Discovered], this was a light-hearted and enjoyably well written first time story while Kirk and Spock are on shore leave. Kirk persuades Spock to accompany him on a picnic with all the accessories, including a wicker basket (borrowed from Dr McCoy) and a “book” to read which turns out to be a “antique” copy of a zine (yes you’ve guessed it – Beyond Dreams)! It is while he and Spock are reading this “book” together (while sitting up a tree no less!) that they come to realise the situation portrayed in the book mirrors how they feel about each other. This one had some lovely light and amusing touches, like when the entire picnic (including the basket) is stolen by huge ants! Plus Kirk’s seemingly bizarre suggestion that he and Spock should read the “book” sitting up a tree! It was an entertaining look at Jim and Spock in a lighter moment away from the ship and how the K/S world we know links into their “world” as they see it. [1]
