Reactions and Reviews
Over the years of reading K/S, I've come across various scenarios of how Kirk and Spock eventually become lovers. Quite a few involve Pon Farr (no surprise there), while for others a traumatic event that happened to one or the other eventually leads to a physical joining. But I have to say, the catalyst in this story has to be one of the most unusual - a piece, or rather several pieces of artwork.Unfortunately, it isn't a picture created by a certain red-headed wonder whose initials happen to be S.B. (now THAT would make for an interesting story), rather, it is Uhura who is the hand behind the pen (or rather stylus). Faced with a long, uneventful shift, she relieves her boredom by working on her sketches, focusing on her unfinished portrait of the Mirror Spock. It isn't long before she finds she has an audience—none other than the original himself. For Spock, the drawing provides his first real insight into his counterpoint's personality, as Kirk has been strangely silent about the matter. Seeing how Uhura has captured the Mirror Spock's seemingly "dangerous aura," his curiousity is aroused and he asks to see her other sketches. His request is granted and as he comes across several of he and Kirk together, the tone of those pictures is much more revealing and he is made to wonder if it is more than just Uhura's perception that is the cause of the intimacy he sees, or is it something more. As he ponders that question, the tables are soon turned and it is Kirk staring over his shoulder. So once again the sketchbook changes hands, but the captain's reaction to the drawings is quite different. For him, they bring certain fantasies alive, fantasies he can't quite bring himself to share with a certain Vulcan. That is soon to change, however, as a shared workout resulting in close physical contact reveals Kirk's true feelings for Spock and he is finally given the chance to share those feelings, feelings which he finds are reciprocated. And, in an unexpected bonus, Spock at last gets to hear what Kirk really thinks of his bearded counterpart, although to neither one's surprise, Kirk much prefers the original. As does Spock. Which, of course, is as it should be.
A fun, interesting, and certainly original first time story. [1]
Uhura has a devilish interest in art. Why not? Star- mapping, we hear, is deadly boring. This time, though, her innocent hobby lands her in hot water. If not hot, then tepid, as her captain and his first peruse-- separately--her portfolio of sketches of the crew; but mainly of Kirk and especially of Spock--ours and the one she'd had close and rough contact with on the ISS Enterprise. Her obsession with the alternate Spock, his beard and his seeming "un-lethalness" has piqued her interest. It will pique something else later, too.Her portraits are flattering and they also can't help but highlight her two superior officers' closeness, besides pointing out their manly charms. In any case, Mr. Spock is curious and asks to see her portfolio. Reluctantly, Uhura agrees. Cutie Kirk comes along and is slightly miffed to see that his second-in-command had been allowed to check out the drawings. He feels left out because Uhura had previously denied him access to them.
Finally, though, she gives in and Kirk is struck by the suggestiveness of the portraits. He is genuinely surprised at the inferences resonating from them, which is the true nature of his friendship with Spock. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words and his love for Spock slowly dawns on him. Spock is along for the ride too; he's a hot Vulcan, isn't he? After much wondering and soul-searching, much honesty with themselves, both men are led to the logical conclusion.
This catalyst, the realizations on Jim and Spock's parts (couldn't resist that one) of just what their friendship is all about leads to one of the most sensual and just plain exciting scenarios in this zine. A sizzling session in the gym. It was a definite turn-on, one of the best I've ever read.
When and how Kirk make love, the wonderful lines to keep in my heart, such as, "Spock, I really like having my nipples sucked." And Kirk's lame suggestion that he might make a holovid of them to keep for when they're old and maybe losing their memories--all were exciting, sweet and heartwarming, in that order. A fabulous addition to this special zine.[2]
