Reactions and Reviews

1992

I confess that I had some trouble following this short-short story. The telling of this changed back and forth between universes, point of view, time/tense, and place with few clues to help the reader follow along. While some sentences were overly poetic -- making them awkward - others were poorly structured, making them difficult to understand.

Though I loved the idea of the personal journal, I was uncomfortable with the idea that mainline Kirk would show it to Mirror Spock as I thought it an unnecessary breach of Mirror Kirk's privacy. Also, it was jolting, on page 113, when I came across the sentence, "Ever since he had found the log stashed in the back of the wardrobe." Two pages earlier, we were told that Kirk found the journal by unconsciously tapping it with a finger, which I thought meant it had been lying on a desk...?

Another disagreement I had was that mainline Kirk's "need to escape was replaced with a form of complacency born of tiredness." I find it difficult to imagine Kirk, the responsible commander, becoming complacent while still trapped (especially when assuming that the rest of the landing party was still trapped with him. I think he'd keep trying. Also, in the last scene. I was puzzled as to why Kirk was just now telling Spock why he fell in love with him. If they were on Vulcan to get approval to bond, it seems like they would have already vocalized their feelings for each other. So, to me, that brief conversation seemed out of place.

I did like the idea that they intend to be together regardless of what the Vulcan Council decides. [1]
