Reactions and Reviews
1993
A really interesting long story that leads us through the "Guardian" back to ancient Vulcan. Spock comes by accident alone in that violent time. The author describes perfectly how our logical First Officer slowly changes into a proud warrior. Similar to "All Our Yesterdays", when he ate meat and was violent and passionate, his change is so subliminal that Spock doesn't really realize it himself. I loved that Spock is still this warrior later back on the Enterprise. It is very believable, that he isn't able to change back in such a short time.
What I didn't like was the flowery language through the whole story. I love such a language for love scenes, descriptions of warriors, battles, and so on, but when the crew was in front of the "Guardian", when the First Officer was thrown through the portal and later back on the ship, I would have preferred a writing with more facts and in the "normal" style (sorry, I have no English words for this, but I mean the difference between romantic love stories and so on. and narrative style).
And there is something I didn't understand: on page 92 they see through the portal two males, one dark, the other fair, as they made passionate love by the light of a fire." But Kirk and Spock never made love this way in the past. So, where does this image come from?[1]
1995
Raw emotions stripped of the fine veneer of civilization. Honest and truthful and a delight to read. [2]
