A Kirk by Any Other Name is a K/S story written by Carol A. Piece.

It was published in the print zine As I Do Thee #3.

Summary

"Kirk and a crewman are beamed up and a female copy is created of both, causing problems when Spock is attracted to the female Kirk."

Excerpt

"Kirk stepped off the transporter platform... he shuddered when his eyes locked onto the expressions of the two men... there was nothing wrong with him... he turned around. Adams was standing speechless. Beside him stood a female... a female James T. Kirk!"

Reactions and Reviews

This is about a female James Kirk being on board, through the transporter, due to a planetary anomaly.

This always gets me: The point is made that she has short hair, no makeup and wears pants, but she's "feminine," So makeup, foofooed hair and bare (shaved of course) legs are the essence of Feminine? And so what if she wasn't so-called feminine? You could have made her butch and I sure wouldn't have minded, A gorgeously butch female James Kirk, I think I'm falling in love.... (Not that I'm not already, of course.) [I had a bit of a diatribe here, but decided not to, about butch and femme, threatened men, the portrayals of women in media and life].

Back to the story, this Jay Kirk ...beautiful, natural female James Kirk. Thanks to Marilyn Cole's perfect drawing; she's so just-right. Just like Jim Kirk is. Every bit as Kirk as Jim, but also with.. I was going to say something about some "female" character traits, but the fact is, this person is exactly like Jim Kirk, except a physical female (or she has the potential to be exactly like him; she's unsocialized in the beginning of the story). Jim Kirk, the personality, the character traits, could easily be a woman (and would be called butch—and beautiful), as easily as this female is just like Jim Kirk.

Kirk is disturbed by her presence; Spock is fascinated. Kirk is jealous of Spock's attentions to her, and irrationally resentful of her, her popularity with the crew.

Some nice ship-board social scenes.

Anyway, she ends up dying, as they get farther from the planet and the anomaly that spawned her. And of course it was Jim Kirk, not Jay Kirk, who Spock wanted all along, and all the misunderstandings are cleared up.

The writing was somewhat in the "told" mode, at the expense of us truly feeling along with the characters, but I'll sure remember this Jay Kirk.[1]

My main problem with the story is Kirk's immaturity and vindictiveness. I also thought that the planet that caused this landing party doubling problem should be quarantined so that other starships don't have this experience. This Kirk was so self-involved that he probably didn't even think of other starships. That's not a responsible way to command.[2]
