It was published in The Lucky and the Strong and is online.

Excerpt

"Ken got up, and walked to the door in stocking-feet. Opening the door revealed Dave Starsky, loaded down with what looked like everything he owned.

Ken took the picture in with a terrible suspicion. They wouldn't. They couldn't. The irony would be tragic.

Starsky smiled and elbowed past him. "It's your lucky day, Choirboy... I happen t'be your new roomie..." Starsky announced. Wearing a white T-shirt blazoned with the academy seal and navy-blue sweats, he stood there, surprisingly blue eyes just beaming.

"No," Ken said, blankly. Then, with dawning disbelief, and half an octave lower, he repeated himself. "No.""

Reactions and Reviews

1996

'What do you imagine S&H were like as students at the Academy/rookies?' 1990 was also the year in which I had that interesting experience of going with other SH fan-friends on a tour of The LAPD where some features were certainly relevant to the Academy course. The glimpses of training were fascinating — target practice, role-playing in dangerous situations, for example. The question recalls some satisfying fanzine fiction, especially Lynna Bright's very good story from just a few years back 'A Great Ending' (in Linda’s zine, 'The Lucky and the Strong. One of my top favourite stories — one to return to. [1]

I enjoyed reading about how they started. This was great. I can see it going just like this. Thanks for writing this.[2]

Nice! Another point of view of how it all started.[3]
