Reactions and Reviews

The Enterprise is quarantined due to an accident in the labs, Spock is working overtime as a result, and Kirk has little to do and is bored without his lover. Browsing the subspace adult register one evening, Kirk peruses some nude photos posted, including some that surprise and shock him once he realizes who the model is. (Or who he thinks the model is. The face is hidden, but a scar on the hip makes Kirk thinks Spock is the model.) Kirk is compelled to track down the photographer to ask him some questions about the model. His worst fears are confirmed, and Kirk becomes angry and jealous about the pictures, and this leads him to behavior with the photographer that he soon regrets, and a confrontation with Spock. Animasola is a good writer, and the story started out promisingly, with the descriptions of the photos and Kirk’s suspicions that Spock was the model. However, I really don’t care too much for the premise of this type of story, in which a misunderstanding develops between Kirk and Spock due to one of them jumping to conclusions about the other. Why didn’t Kirk just ask Spock about the photos instead of going to all the trouble of meeting with the photographer? And why would Kirk immediately assume the photos meant Spock was being unfaithful to him? In the story, he says Spock had had lovers before him, including male lovers, so why would he immediately suspect Spock of infidelity? This reflects a basic lack of trust in Spock that wasn‘t really explained in the story. Nor was Spock’s nude modeling ever explained. I spent the entire story wondering why Spock had done this, and never got much of an answer. I enjoyed Animasola‘s previous K/S zine story, “Harp Solo”, but I had some problems with this one. [1]
