A Farm in Iowa is a Stargate Atlantis John/Rodney story by sheafrotherdon. It's the first part in the A Farm in Iowa 'Verse series.

Summary: John inherits a farm, Rodney ends up entirely out of his element, and there is much ado about baseball. Completely AU

The story was podficced by librarychick 94 in 2013[1] and it inspired the story He Kissed Me First by Losyark in 2007.[2]

Reactions and Reviews

John moves into his grandfather's farm after leaving the military. Rodney's car happens to break down near by. And so begins one of the richest and most beloved AU 'verses in the fandom. It turns into a kidfic, btw. All I can say is read it, read it, read it.[3]

The idea to have John leave the military after some time in Antarctica, but before meeting O'Neill, just to move to a farm in Iowa he inherited from his grandfather may seem a bit odd, but in this case it really works. Since it's a slash story Rodney's car breaks down near John's farm, and a friendship starts to develop. This story is a delightful slowly building romance, fun to read, and has a great atmosphere with lots of vivid little details. (The whole 'verse is also on AO3.) [4]

Long (really long) (yet still not long enough) AU set on, yes, a farm in Iowa, yet in which somehow everyone manages to be themselves (a shot-down pilot who likes college football and things that go faster than 250 mph, a neurotic astrophysicist addicted to junk food and said pilot). Also Ronon is a poet at the University of Iowa and—look you should just read this, okay. I love it so much I made about a zillion covers and here’s one of them. Honestly I don’t even LIKE kidfic (or for that matter kids?) but Col. John Sheppard, USAF puts on a diaper WITH DUCT TAPE and something in my heart broke into a million happy pieces and stayed broken.[5]

Don't know where I got it from, haven't gotten around to exploring the author, don't even like the character set, pairing or orientation.

It's a long slash story, complete with adult content about two characters I cannot see as a couple, ie: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, NC-17.

I loved it.

Beautiful writing, imagery and emotions that leap off the page, excellent character depiction. wonderful adaptation of story points and other characters and original characters to love.

The farm is a character by itself, as is the Iowan setting.

Best of all? The author avoids all the pitfalls of fanfiction commonly witnessed.

A thousand pages of fic-reader bliss (though honestly? I skipped a lot of the sex. There is such a thing as too much. It's almost as though he/she was expecting you to stop and tune in again, each probable session you are treated to more McKay/Sheppard lovin') in handy PDF.

Must read. After assessing the warnings provided. Everyone need not like the same kind of tea.[6]
