Reactions and Reviews
I love stories, where McCoy tells "the Tale"... and this one is very nice...[1]
Warm humour. Bones, looking at those two, thinking the odd comment about “the captain,” a Kirk who really hasn’t grown up, still that little boy, full of mischief, caught with his hand in the cookie jar. There is one thing I’d like top mention. I missed Bones’ reaction between “… even Pon Farr…” and …”Someone like you, Jim?” After all he had a hunch, just confirmed. It feels as if something is missing between those two lines. Then we don’t get to see Jim’s reaction to Bones’ “Someone like you, Jim?” Kirk’s face surely must have shown something, they aren’t exactly talking about the weather forecast.[2]
So often I really enjoy the very short stories in zines. This is definitely one of them.Adorable beginning with first-person McCoy observing the captain and first officer. They take a woman ambassador on board who is obviously attracted to Spock which drives Kirk wild with jealousy.
Neat typo: "Then he turned on his hell and walked out."
Even though this is a short story, it's still kind of abrupt when McCoy out of the blue tells Kirk he should make a play for Spock.
But nice ending with McCoy seeing them kiss on the observation deck.[3]
2001
Some stories grab you from the start. This one did. Maybe because we know right off ifs McCoy talking and his curiosity is on red alert!First person stories are hard to write, especially if the story-teller is a regular character and we have preconceived expectations of him. This one is very well executed.
It's a great tale! An ambassador being transported by the Enterprise has her eye on Spock, Kirk has eyes only for Spock and McCoy is watching the whole thing like a hawk! Jealousy's usually an ugly thing, but here it's precious and highly entertaining.
My only disappointment was that the entire thing was only a 3 1/2 page teaser. I wanted more! New writer? Very imaginative one who I'd like to hear from again.[4]
