AT-AT Commander is a multi-part Star Wars drama/war fan fiction story written by Jeremy Sadler. It was published in Alliance Issue 2 (1995) and Issue 3 (1996). It was not published to completion.

Plot

Lieutenant Ryan Matthias is an Imperial Officer in the Sector Central (Supply) office, commanded by Captain Kalmussen. His job is to route supply shipments, often redirecting to make more efficient use of resources. It's boring but safe. After he makes a mistake that results in a substantial amount of Imperial military equipment falling into Rebel hands, his punishment is assignment to command an AT-AT (All Terrain Armoured Transport)[1] in 3rd Company, 7439th Assault Regiment, a unit involved in battle on Gattaine, a world known colloquially in the Imperial Army as "the Hell Pit" and which is in rebellion against the Empire.

Characters

  • Lieutenant Ryan Matthias, a young Imperial officer.
  • Captain Andreas Kalmussen, an older, bald, stern Imperial Officer.
  • Sergeant DeVola, a young enlisted Imperial AT-AT pilot.
  • Major Ashburn, an Imperial Officer who commands 3rd Company, 7439th Assault Regiment.
  • Lieutenant Sydas, an Imperial Officer and AT-AT commander.
  • Lieutenant Hanna, a white-skinned Velkorian Imperial Officer and AT-AT commander.
  • Lieutenant (Acting-Captain) Mil Savisek, an Imperial Officer and AT-AT platoon commander.
  • Corporal Geffen, an enlisted Imperial AT-AT gunner.

Themes

The story deals with themes of paying for errors, courage, brothers-in-arms and learning from mistakes.

Reviews

Darren Maxwell, in Alliance Issue 3, writes:

Excellent writing with a brilliant concept, allowing for limitless development, definitely my pick for best story of the issue. I could not help but think it likely that the simple Matthias will probably become the best AT-AT commander in the Empire, eventually earning respect even from the hardened Kalmussen. On that note, it was not mentioned by Kalmussen was being transferred to join Matthias, was it out of choice or a reassignment because of the supply debarkle? One thing worth noting is that the writer certainly knows about military structures, protocols etc. which added to the story's fine detail. Can't wait for the second part.[2]
