Reddit is an extremely popular 'entertainment, social networking, and news website where registered community members can submit content, such as text posts or direct links'.[1] Content is organised into 'subreddits' (a.k.a. subs): user-created communities with specific rules or guidelines for content. Content and comments can be 'upvoted' or 'downvoted' by registered users, granting more popular posts increased visibility.

Fans use Reddit in a variety of ways. One popular fannish use of Reddit is fandom- or canon-specific subreddits that serve as hubs for discussion in much the same way as journal site communities. Canon discussion and fan theories frequently appear in canon-specific subs for ongoing, serialized canons. Some non-fannish subreddits, such as /r/AmITheAsshole and /r/relationships, have also become popular in various fandoms as inspiration for social media fic, with fics written as in-character submissions to the subs.

Content Policies

Although many subreddits enforce strict rules regarding hate speech and bullying, reddit as a whole is not a 'safe space.' Harassment is disallowed and can be reported to both the moderators of a specific subreddit and the administration. Subreddits found to be in violation of Reddit policies may be banned or made. See reddit's content policy and 'reddiquette' etiquette guidelines for specific rules.

YouTube user C.G.P. Grey has published a popular video further describing reddit's function and culture.

AMA

AMAs, or "Ask Me Anything" (also "AMAA" - Ask Me Almost/Absolutely Anything), are a popular thread format on Reddit. They are often used for guest and celebrity users, such as John Green, Bill Gates, President Barack Obama, President Donald Trump, and Zachary Quinto. Any user on the website may post a comment or question for the AMA host to ask and respond to.

Subreddits

There are hundreds of subreddits dedicated to specific media like television series, movies and video games. Fans use the subreddits to discuss content, make social connections, to share fannish creations like fan art and memes and to grow their fandoms. Some fans prefer having discussions on Reddit because of the format: a post is made and all the responses are contained in one thread.
