ACTV's - Partners is a very early Starsky & Hutch newsletter edited by Pat Massie. It had the subtitle: "Dedicated to the spirit of Starsky & Hutch."

The newsletter was mostly typed in caps.

It was published before most fans did not have access to, or the financial means to purchase, VCRs, and were therefore completely dependent on television stations to air re-runs (often crudely edited to allow for more commercials). Or to listen to the show on passed-around audio recordings.

This newsletter's purpose was to be a cheerleader for the fandom, and to bring the show back as re-runs on national television. In the first issue, the editor wrote:

SURELY THERE ARE FANS OUT THERE WHO REALLY CAN'T FORGET WHAT S&H MEANT TO THEM.

AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED, S&H LIVES! IN SPITE OF ABC NETWORK POLITICS AND PRODUCTION COMPANY POLICIES, THAT LITTLE OLE' TV SHOW SURVIVES IN THIS PARTNER'S HEART.

I, FOR ONE, AM DETERMINED TO SEE IT RETURNED TO THE AIR.

WHY? #1 BECAUSE QUALITY TELEVISION IS SADLY LACKING ON TV. #2 I AM A S&H IDIOT.

Similar Endeavors

While never mentioned by name, much of the push back to television programming and decisions was in direct response to the kraken, The Nielsen Ratings.

Fans have had a long history of fighting back against what they saw as bullying by The Nielsen Ratings, and some of those fans created home-grown attempts to make their voices heard.

Some of these attempts were fan campaigns which often took the form of letter campaigns.

Other fans created organizations. Some examples:

Issue 1

ACTV's - Partners 1 was published in January 1980 and contains 3 pages.

cover of issue #1

The theme word was "Teamwork."

The editor, Massie, used the show, "Paper Moon," as an example of a successful fan campaign to bring back a show, stating that this was done after the networks received 20,000 "signatures and cards" from fans: "ISN'T THAT INCREDIBLY REASSURING NEWS? IT CAN BE DONE!"

From Massie:

IF WE WORK TOGETHER, WE CAN WIN!

WHAT I AM PROPOSING IS A NATION WIDE NETWORK OF FANS (PARTNERS) WHO WILL WORK TOGETHER IN AN ORGANIZED AND PROFESSIONAL MANNER UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE ALLIANCE OF CONCERNED TV VIEWERS.

WHAT IS ACTV? LET ME TELL YOU.

ACTC is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the viewer's voice in network programming.

It is a consumer group that wants to increase viewer awareness of network policies and politics.

We feel that viewers should and can have a say in what is shown on TV.

ACTC, as a special interest group, is primarily interested in bringing STARSKY & HUTCH back to air via reruns or syndication.

From Massie, reasons to bring the show back, plus some hatred of the show B.A.D.C.A.T.S.:

We all know that S&H was a great show. It had good scripts, fine direction, credible storyline, exciting action, and believability. The two principal actors tried to bring professionalism and integrity into each and every episode.

We also know that D.S. AND PMG were reluctant to do another year in the series. They would have liked to do a series of 6 or 8 two-hour movies. Their producers did not see it that way, so a great show, and a wonderful partnership was eliminated iron ABC's line-up.

We have to accept this. But, I ask you, do we accept this:

#1 REMOVING THE SHOW FROM LATE NITE PROGRAMMING ELIMINATES PAYING RESIDUALS (FEES EACH TIME AN EPISODE IS RUN) TO THE ACTORS INVOLVED.

THIS IS, I FEEL, A CHASTISEMENT OF GLASER-SOUL FOR THEIR OUTSPOKEN INVOLVEMENT IN THE PRODUCTION OF THE SHOW.

(When we PARTNERS bring the show back on, we put money in David and Paul's pockets.)

#2 B.A.D.C.A.T.S.

A TRULY DISTASTEFUL TOPIC, BUT ONE I MUST DISCUSS NEVERTHELESS.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THIS SHOW IS ACTUALLY ON THE AIR. ABC HAS SUNK TO NEW LOWS IN ITS PROGRAMMING.

THIS SHOW IS: A DIRECT RIP-OFF FROM S&H. IT IS S&H DONE ON A SHOE-STRING BUDGET. IT IS S&H WITHOUT THE "SOUL" (pardon the pun). IT IS S&H WITHOUT THE TALENT, THE EFFORT, AND THE CHEMISTRY OF GLASER-SOUL. IT IS A POOR IMITATION OF THE ORIGINAL. IN A WORD, IT S-T-I-N-K-S.

SURPRISINGLY ENOUGH, MR. SPELLING PRODUCES THIS TURKEY. SPELLING AND GOLDBERG PRODUCED S&H.

DO YOU SUPPOSE THAT THEY EXPECT TO FOOL US WITH THIS CHEAP COPY?

I SUPPOSE WE'RE EXPECTED TO SAY: "Cripes, with one one closed the blond one almost looks like Hutch's brother."

C'MON! JUST WHAT KIND OF MENTALITY DO THEY THINK WE VIEWERS HAVE?

[...]

I SAY, BLAST B.A.D.C.A.T.S.!!!!!! WRITE TO ABC, TELL THEM, IN A POLITE, BUT FIRM LETTER WHY, YOU AS A VIEWER, NOT NECESSARILY AS A S&H FAN, FIND THE SHOW SO BAD.

[...]

I HAVE WATCHED 5 AND 10 MINUTE SEGMENTS OF THE SHOW, IN ORDER TO GET MY DANDER UP. IF YOU WATCH B.A.D.C.A.T.S. WEEK AFTER WEEK, HOWEVER, YOU WILL INCREASE ITS RATINGS POPULARITY, A VERY BAD THING TO DO. THE NAME OF THE GAME, PARTNER, IS RATINGS.

From Massie, more on boycotting ABC entirely:

I PERSONALLY AM BOYCOTTING ALL ABC-TV PROGRAMMING.

I DO NOT WATCH ABC NETWORK SHOWS OR LOCAL AFFILIATES BECAUSE OF MY HOSTILITY CONCERNING THE REMOVAL OF S&H FROM THEIR LATE NITE LINE-UP.

WANT TO GO AS FAR AS I'VE GONE IN MY VENDETTA AGAINST THIS NETWORK?

BOYCOTT ABC IN THE MONTH OF FEB.

FEBRUARY IS RATINGS MONTH, AND TIME FOR THE "SWEEPS." [...] The sweep ratings are vital to the economies of network affiliates because it determines the stations' advertising budget for the coming quarter.

IF YOU WERE TO ELIMINATE ABC FROM YOU[R] TV DIET, THIS WOULD HURT THEM.

IF YOU WERE TO ELIMINATE JUST ONE NIGHT OF ABC NETWORK VIEWING FROM YOUR SCHEDULE, YOU WILL HIT THEM WHERE IT HURTS, IN THE OLE POCKETBOOK.

Issue 2

ACTV's - Partners 2 was published in March 1980 and contains 4 pages.

The theme word was "Loyalty."

The TOTM for this issue was "The thing that I liked best about S&H was..."

cover of issue #2
  • many encouraging words from the editor about fan power and how to leverage it
  • the lyrics to "Gypsy Wind" by Dan Fogelberg in honor of Paul Michael Glaser's birthday
  • several responses to the TOTM
  • a letter by Naomi F. Marrow in response to Thomas P. Chisman, WVEC General Manager

From Massie:

IT CREEPS UP ON YOU, BUT SPRING HAS FINALLY ARRIVED. IT REALLY IS GOOD TO BE OVER THE WINTER BLUES. IT WAS SUCH A LONG ONE WITHOUT S&H. I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND A SHOW TO TAKE ITS PLACE, BUT, TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH, I DON'T REALLY WANT ONE.

THERE'S QUITE ALOT TO BE SAID FOR LOYALTY, YOU KNOW. IT MAKES ME FEEL WARM ALL OVER JUST TO KNOW THERE ARE PEOPLE LIKE YOU OUT THERE, STILL LOYAL TO S&H BECAUSE OF THEIR DEDICATION TO THE SPIRIT OF THE SHOW, FRIENDSHIP, LOVE, AND CARING, ALL QUALITIES THIS SORRY PLANET LACKS.

BUT, WE'LL KEEP IT ALIVE, RIGHT, PARTNER? TEAMWORK (discussed in the last issue), LOYALTY, AND DEDICATION WILL NOT ONLY KEEP THE SPIRIT OF THE SHOW ALIVE, IT WILL RETURN OUR SHOW TO THE AIR.

IF WE WORK TOGETHER, WE CAN WIN!

From Massie:

THIS MANIA THAT HAS ASSAILED ME (starsky&hutchitis), THE BIGGER I REALIZED THE S&H UNDERGROUND FAMILY IS. THERE ARE STILL PLENTY OF THE TRUE BELIEVERS OUT THERE!

I'LL BET YOU A PEPPORONNI [sic] PIZZA WITH ANCHOVIES THAT LONG AFTER "CHIPS," "BJ AND THE BEAR," AND "THE DUKES OF HAZARD," BITE THE DUST, S&H (AND ALL THAT IT STANDS FOR) WILL CARRY ON.

NOW, DON'T GET ME WRONG. I LIKE THE ABOVE MENTIONED SHOWS. BUT TO ME, THEY DON'T CARRY THE SAME RELATIONSHIPAL [sic] IMPACT THAT S&H DOES. THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT THAT SHOW THAT TRANSCENDS TIME AND PLACE. S&H COULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT TWO COPS, TWO BUTCHERS, TWO PLUMBERS, TWO NEIGHBORS, TWO FRIENDS, AND STILL HAVE BEEN A SUCCESS.

UNFORTUNATELY, ITS DESIGNATION AS CRIME-DRAMA IS A DEFINITE HINDRANCE AS FAR AS UNIVERSAL TELEVISION MANAGEMENT APPROVAL IS CONCERNED. YOU SEE, THE PRESIDENT/GENERAL MANAGER OF A TV STATION HAS FINAL DECISION MAKING CONCERNING THE AIRING OF MOST SHOWS.

THE FOLLOWING COMMENTS ARE FROM A LETTER WRITTEN BY THOMAS P. CHISMAN, GENERAL MANAGER OF WVEC IN NORFOLK VIRGINIA TO ACTV MEMBER NAOMI F. MARROW:

"I doubt seriously that this series will be rescheduled at anytime in the near future. It was made in an era of what we classify as semi-violent cops and robbers and it played well. It declined after a while, however, and there seems to be a tendency today to go to more relevant series, i.e. "Family," "Eight is Enough," etc..."

Massie congratulates newsletter recipients of bringing B.A.D.C.A.T.S. to its knees:

WE ARE GLAD TO NOTE THAT ABC HAS CANCELED B.A.D.C.A.T.S. AT A LOSS OF OVER $600,000 TO THE NETWORK. EVERETT CHAMBERS, PRODUCER OF THE SHOW SAID, "It was an ill-conceived and ineptly executed series." YOU READ THAT FIRST RIGHT HERE IN ISSUE #1 OF ACTV'S-PARTNERS. AREN'T YOU GLAD THAT THOSE LETTERS AND CARDS THAT YOU SENT WERE READ? AREN'T YOU GLAD THAT YOU PERSONALLY HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH HAVING B.A.D.C.A.T.S. CANCELLED? I KNOW THAT I AM. YOU CAN HAVE A SAY IN WHAT IS SHOWN ON TV, BELIEVE ME!

Some more encouragement:

IT CAN BE DONE! STAR TREK LIVES BECAUSE LOYAL FANS WOULD NOT LET IT DIE. PAPER CHASE WAS PICKED UP FOR SYNDICATION AFTER CBS RECEIVED 20,000 CARDS AND LETTERS FROM LOYAL FANS.

LOYALTY, TEAMWORK, AND DEDICATION ARE WHAT IT TAKES. I KNOW OF TWO SUCCESSFUL COPS THAT USED THOSE SAME THREE VIRTUES TO CRACK SOME PRETTY TOUGH CASES.

HOW ABOUT YOU, PARTNER?

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

Response to the TOTM:

This might sound kind of dumb, but [their relationship] is what I liked best. I liked the way that S&H were so close. They would do anything for each other. I mean, they could be so close without putting the

idea of homosexuality forward, Some people would probably picture it that way because they have sick minds.

Response to the TOTM:

The thing I liked best about S&H was (or should I say is?) that David and Paul had such a "chemistry" between them. They're both so talented, and they're 2 in a million. Never will there be another TV duo like Glaser-Soul. They're the greatest!

Response to the TOTM:

The thing I liked best about S&H was the way they did things. They are just out of site! [sic] Their show was always exciting. They always lifted my spirits. They showed me that there is something for everyone. It makes me happy know there are two guys like that in the world.

Issue 3

ACTV's - Partners 3 was published in May 1980 and contains 3 pages.

cover of issue #3

The theme word was "K.T.F. (Keep the Faith)."

The TOTM was "What is my favorite S&H episode and why?"

  • This issue, like all the others, includes very detailed instructions on how to write to the networks and television stations and what to say on your letters and postcards.
  • a review of the pilot episode of the show: "I JUST CANNOT TELL YOU HOW NICE IT WAS TO SEE THOSE TWO SMILING PAGES AGAIN. IT WAS LIKE SEEING TWO OLD FRIENDS."
  • fans' short answers regarding the question in the previous issue, "What's your favorite episode?" (Gillian, The Set Up, The Game, Shootout, Sweet Revenge, and Partners were mentioned, and the two top winners were Gillian and Sweet Revenge)
  • some song lyrics that remind Massie of David Soul (Minstrel Gigolo by Christopher Cross)

From Massie:

WELL, IT WAS A YEAR AGO THIS MONTH THAT THE LAST PRIME TIME EPISODE OF STARSKY & HUTCH WAS RUN. I KNOW THAT YOU ALL REMEMBER "SWEET REVENGE."

WEREN’T YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT WONDERING IF STARSKY WOULD SURVIVE? I FELT SO BAD FOR POOR STARSKY AND EVEN WORSE FOR HUTCH. BOY, WAS I GLAD TO SEE HIM RECOVER! I WAS A NERVOUS WRECK DURING ALL THOSE TENSE HOSPITAL SCENES.

DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, PARTNER, BUT I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY TELEVISION SHOW IN THE PAST YEAR THAT MATCHES UP TO THE QUALITY OF S&H. I MISS THAT SHOW LIKE ANYTHING.

IT’S HARD TO REMAIN INTERESTED IN A FAVE TV SHOW ONCE IT IS REMOVED FROM a NETWORK'S LINE-UP. EVERYTHING ON TV IS SO FAD ORIENTED, EVERYBODY IS SIMPLY INTERESTED IN SEEING NEW FACES.

STILL. THAT'S WHY THIS MONTH'S THEME IS K.T.F. (KEEP THE FAITH!) STARSKY & HUTCH IS ALIVE AND WELL...

There are many short reports of which cities are airing reruns of the show, and how new fans are becoming converts:

AS YOU CAN SEE NEW PEOPLE ARE JOINING THE RANKS OF THE FAITHFUL ALL THE TIME. YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY S&H FANATICAL NUT TYPE PERSON OUT THERE.

From a fan in Philadelphia, Maria Farina:

I adore Paul and David. They are the sunshine in my life! I'm fortunate enough to be able to see S&H reruns on a local station five days a week, but would love to have it on nationally. I’ve been a fanatic since the beginning and my love will never wane. I didn’t know how popular S&H and Glaser-Soul still are... I love it! [1]

From Massie:

ABC WILL BE AIRING A MOTION PICTURE COMEDY SPOOF OF FAMOUS TV NETWORK DETECTIVES [2] DURING THE MONTH OF MAY. JAMIE FARR AND JOHN BYNER ARE STARRING AS "STUDSKY AND HATCH" IN ONE SEGMENT OF THE SHOW. BE SURE TO WATCH IT. IT SHOULD BE KIND OF CUTE, EVEN THOUGH THIS PARTICULAR NETWORK GIVES ME GAS.

Issue 4

ACTV's - Partners 4 was published in July 1980 and contains 4 pages (one of those pages is a full-page flyer for Zebra-Con).

The theme word was "Pals."

The TOTM was "Who's your favorite, Starsky or Hutch, and if both are, say why?"

cover of issue #4
  • short description of visiting a fellow fan for two days and availing herself of a VCR and some previously unseen episodes: The Fix, Gillian, and Ballad for a Blue Lady
  • uplifting news about the show going into syndication and being shown on more channels
  • mention of a short-lived fan club, The Paul Michael Glaser Fan Club, out of Beverly Hills, "You get letters back from Paul and everything." (the next issue apologizes and says this fan club is defunct)
  • comments about Soul and Glaser in new movie roles, Soul in "Rage" and Glaser in "Phobia"
  • lyrics to Ambrosia's "Biggest Part of Me"
  • a con report by Maggie Lowery for Zebra-Con '79, see that page

From Massie:

GREEN GREETINGS GO OUT TO YOU ALL, MY SUMMER PALS. IT CERTAINLY HAS BEEN A HOT ONE, HASN'T IT? SPEAKING OF HOT, I'M STILL CARRYING MY TORCH FOR THOSE TWO SEXY COPS. JUST CAN’T HELP MYSELF IT’S RUNNING DEEP IN MY VEINS. SOME PEOPLE MIGHT CALL IT A SICKNESS. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

FOLKS COME INTO MY HOME FOR THE FIRST TIME, LOOK AT MY LIVING ROOM AND SAY, "OH, WHO LIKES STARSKY & HUTCH HERE?" C'EST MOI, KIDDIES!

I USED TO BE A CLOSET FAN, YOU KNOW THE TYPE, REAL SHY AND KIND OF ASHAMED ABOUT THIS FASCINATION OF MINE. YOU SEE, I THOUGHT THAT I WAS "THE ONLY ONE".

WELL, SURPRISE SURPRISE (AS DEAR OLD GOMER PYLE USED TO SAY), I AINT THE ONLY FRANTIC ONE OUT THERE, AND NEITHER ARE YOU. THEE IS NOT THE ONLY S&H LOVER. DON’T IT MAKE YOU FEEL WARM ALL OVER?

THAT'S WHY WERE YOU WONDERING, THIS ISSUE'S THEME IS PALS. YOU AND ME AND THE SUNDRY OTHERS THAT MAKE UP THIS WON¬ DERFUL LITTLE FAMILY OF S&H ENTHUSIASTS.

IT CERTAINLY HAS BECOME BIGGER THAN THE BOTH OF THEM. DON’T YOU LOVE IT??????

From a fan named Karen:

"Hearing from you really gave me a big lift because it's great to know there are other S&H fans out there. I have the fever real, bad, which was beginning to worry me because I'm, after all, 29 years old and I'm supposed to be sensible by. now. Who can be sensible though about S&H? I love 'em, and I miss the show like crazy too - even after all this time.

I was lucky enough, as you were, to see the pilot of S&H on the afternoon movie. It was only shown on channel 8, which we doi get very well, but I was perfect happy to watch them through the snow -as long as I could see their beautiful faces! I had never seen the pilot before, so was an additional treat for me.

In fact, I didn't discover the show until after it had been on for some time, I missed the entire first season, and most of the second, I saw the whole this season and into the fourth until they took it off. We even got cheated out of the re-runs! I don't see why they cancelled I but if they had to do it, I sure wish they hadn't done it in mid¬ season like they did.

[the editor replies]: BOY, AINT THAT THE GOD'S TRUTH? THE NETWORK PROGRAMIMING BOYS STILL GET MY UNDYING HATRED FOR THE WAY FOURTH SEASON WAS SHOWN. I HAVE DISCOVERED IN MY TRAVELS THAT CERTAIN EPISODES WERE NOT EVEN SHOWN IN MY AREA! SUCH AS, THAT GEM BALLAD FOR A BLUE LADY".
THANK YOU, ABC. NOW YOU KNOW WHY I WATCH ONLY CABLE TV AND PBS.
BOYCOTT COMMERCIAL TV!

Issue 5/6

ACTV's - Partners 5/6 was published in September 1980 and contains 5 pages.

This was the last issue.

The theme word was "Always."

cover of issue #5/6

The TOTM was "What first attracted you to the program?"

  • a poem addressed to Spelling and Goldberg, the show's producers
  • some inspirational sayings about partnerships
  • a short essay by Marion Hale called "Thoughts on Television" (all networks are "in it for a buck," television is big business, fans have power by refusing to watch and therefore hitting networks in the pocketbook, the fall line-up being presented by television is bad and appeals to "the lowest common denominator, of which I'd like to believe I'm not a part." But "LONG LIVE STARSKY& HUTCH." But despite bad television, "those benighted souls, such as the PTA, who are selflessly trying to save my mind or my soul. Lord save us from altruistic do-gooders! Englightening self-interest is, in my not-so-humble opinion, is the only logical motive for doing anything.")

A fan, Venta P. Lee, submits a poem about the first show of the fourth season, addressed to Spelling and Goldberg:

Of Starsky & Hutch
I'm the greatest fan.
I never miss a show.
But watched that one
As long as it ran
And I think you ought to know.
And, Oh God, the acting
An elementary school play
Without rehearsal would be better.
But I don't hold a grudge
For the stars, 'cos as they say
It was a very long summer.
As for the writer,
Originality
Was the furthest thing from his mind.
And his occupation
Should now be
Pumping gas in Palestine.
I don't really mean
To criticize.
I love it very much
But to return that show
Would not be wise
For the reputation of Starsky & Hutch.

From Massie, who comments about how this is the last issue:
