Hyunjin (Hwang Hyunjin, 황현진) is a member of the K-Pop group, Stray Kids. Born 20 March 2000, he is a main dancer and member of the Danceracha unit. He is also a rapper and vocalist and has written and composed some songs for the group. He was born and raised in Seoul, Korea.

In June 2023, on Shining Awards, he was nominated for and won (with 683k+ votes) 'Best 4th Gen Kpop Dancer[1].'

Hiatus & Scandals

2018

On the 7th of April 2018, someone posted screen captures of a conversation with a supposed former classmate of Hyunjin on the Pann.nate forums, claiming that he was verbally abusive and had threatened violence against them[4] The date of the text message conversation screen capture was 22 September 2017.

Stray Kids held a fansign event on the 8th of April 2018, and during their performance Hyunjin began to cry[5]. Many fans on Twitter seemed to believe that he was crying due to the accusations, while others were unsure, and many more had no idea at all why he might be upset. This sentiment was also shared in an article posted on the 9th of April 2018[6].

Fans were skeptical of the supposed Ask.FM account(s) where Hyunjin allegedly made bad remarks.

I can't read korean so there's no way I can verify the following: Suppossedly, the korean-speaking fans have found that the accounts being used against Hyunjin's case have similar content posted on them. And that with some digging, they found even more accounts numbering in the dozens with usernames related to "Hwang Hyunjin" (ex. hjhwang001) with similar crude posts that date to a year ago (iirc, Hyunjin was an already known JYP trainee in 2016).

2021

On the 22nd for February 2021 former classmate(s) claimed that Hyunjin harassed them[11]. It was reported[12] that JYPE was uncertain that these allegations were accurate, and that they believed such accusations were made with mal-intent. On the same day, an article[13] was published quoting a post[14] on Pann.nate, supposedly written by a former friend and classmate, refuting the allegations.

The 23rd of February 2021, the same claimant of the previous day posted[15] again, stating they'd seen or heard of other victims stepping forward, and to please message them on Instagram in order to collect proof that they were all separate people. They also stated that they had been in contact with JYPE. Another purported classmate posted that day trying to clarify the situation from their own perspective[16].

On the 25th of February 2021, the Stray Kids official Instagram shared an image of an apology[17] written by Hyunjin.

The following day, the 26th of February 2021[18], someone who claimed to be Hyunjin's former teacher said that he spoke with other teachers, and together they felt that Hyunjin's actions matched the air of the student body at the time, and that they did not feel he was necessarily a bully. The same day, another person posted[19] to Pann.nate claiming they were also a former class mate who suffered because of Hyunjin.

Hiatus

On the 27th of February 2021, JYPE announced[20] that Hyunjin would be taking a hiatus from entertainment duties to reflect on his past. K-Pop fans had a variety of reactions to the news of his hiatus. Some had neutral reactions, others defensive, and others had already decided they were no longer going to show him support. Some just expressed their disappointment in the fans.

The deed is done, i hope he matures. I hope the victims find closure. And i hope the netizens stop all the hate comments. I'm pretty sure the hiatus was one way because of his mental state and because people were demanding his withdrawal. I believe he should be given a chance to better himself. I am a stay, but he is not my bias. I hope everyone can come out of this happier and healthier, and without scars or trauma. Take care everyone.

He got off lightly in my opinion, idols have been kicked out of groups for less. You do bad things and they come back to bite you in the ass. He’ll be fine.
man, after all the "controversies" or any inconveniences skz had, today is the day i see stay in a bad light. not putting the victim's feelings in consideration at all, boosting the teacher's post which resulted in making the issue bigger than it is, sharing mistranslated posts everywhere then proceed to blaming jype cause they had to halt hyunjin's schedules as damage control after everything they did. everyone, a big hand of applause to STAY!

Stray Kids released their single "OH, Archived version" on the 25th of June 2021, along with a music video which included Hyunjin. Shortly thereafter, JYPE announced that Hyunjin would make his return in July 2021[25]. The fact that he appeared in a music video for this new single did call into question if he was actually, fully on hiatus, but according to ZoomTVEntertainment, "OH" was part of a project that had started in 2019[26], so it may be possible the video was pre-recorded and its release delayed until Hyunjin's return. However, the same article states that fan theories suggested the music video told the story of how SKZ felt with one of their members (Hyunjin) on hiatus, so that would not make sense with the idea of the video being filmed prior to the allegations emerging.

Many fans seemed to accept his return without question, while others felt that there wasn't a complete resolution or clear insight into the situation.

No, this does not prove that he's innocent, it just says that he's coming back. If he spent time reflecting it just says to me that he actually is guilty. If he's innocent I hope they actually prove it

if you read the article "...the two former classmates RESOLVED their misunderstanding and are now "cheering on one another's futures." it's done nothing left to prove or disprove.

The hiatus lasted for four months.
