Ōkami (Japanese: 大神, lit. "great god" or "great spirit") is an action-adventure video game developed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom. It was released for PlayStation 2 in 2006 in Japan and North America, and in 2007 in Europe and Australia.
Fandom
Ōkami has a passionate fandom.
The Ōkami fandom is likely best known for producing visual art. Fan artists seek to evoke the style and motifs of the game, such as vibrant colors, natural beauty, and Japanese folklore. Searching "Okami" in DeviantArt yields over 235 000 results.
The game has also gained a large following within the furries, who appreciate the playable animal protagonist. It won the 2006 Ursa Major Award for best video game; the award has been described as the furry fandom's equivalent of the prestigious Hugo Award.
Sequel
Although Ōkami was a success among critics and audiences, its sales did not meet Capcom's expectations. Clover Studio's next project, God Hand fared even worse in commercial performance. Thus, Capcom shut down Clover Studio in late 2006 after the departure of several game developers, and many Ōkami fans were resigned to never having a sequel.
An unofficial sequel called Ōkamiden was released in 2010. The game was designed in part by the director of the Wii port of Ōkami, but the original game's developers were not involved. Ōkamiden received mixed reactions.
