Wincon is an annual fan-run convention.

It is run by Affectingly and Cee_M, the Co-Lead Organizers, along with a support staff of volunteers (see individual Wincon sections).

Attendance usually falls between 100 and 200 people, and it attracts attendees from across the United States and Canada, as well as Australia, Europe and the UK. While the majority of attendees are women, Wincon is not a women-only event: "We welcome people of many and varied gender identities and backgrounds, including but not limited to cis and trans women and men and people with nonbinary or other identities. We here at Wincon understand the complexities of gender and sexuality and do not seek to define or limit our attendees in this regard." - From the official Wincon website.

Wincon started out as Winchestercon in 2006, and was credited by Super-Wiki as the first Supernatural Convention to be held. It was founded by Ethrosdemon and Estrella30, and was managed by Ethrosdemon and Coiledsoul from Los Angeles in 2007 through Chicago in 2010. The convention was then managed by Affectingly starting at New Orleans in 2011. Cee_M was brought on as a Co-Lead Organizer starting at Orlando in 2014. Wincon's last official convention was the tenth anniversary held October 15–18, 2015. Moving forward the convention has been rebranded as CONfabulation, which is owned by Winconferences LLC and will still have the same spirit of inclusion and acceptance as Wincon.

The convention officially starts on Friday and ends on Sunday, however many attendees arrive as early as Wednesday and leave as late as Monday to enjoy the full Wincon experience.

The convention is always held around mid-October, and moves to different cities within the United States each year:

Focus and Mission

From 2006 to 2009, it was specifically focused on the Supernatural fandom. It featured panels discussing aspects of TV show and the fandom, big screen viewings of recent episodes, a fan vid show, and a lot of socializing. While the convention was not Wincest specific, fans of Wincest and discussions of Wincest were welcomed. The emphasis was to celebrate the creative aspects of fandom, and the culture of online fandom.

In 2010, the convention expanded to include other fandoms and it is now a multi-fandom convention. While fans of any fandom are welcome, some of the more popular fandoms that have had panels include: Doctor Who, Comics (both Marvel and DC), Sherlock, Elementary, Teen Wolf, Welcome to Night Vale, Disney, Star Trek, Hannibal, Bandom (MCR, etc.), and of course Supernatural. Other reoccurring panels include: Slash, Femslash, Kinks, Incest, RPF/RPS, Apocalypse, Vampires, Zombies, and aspects of fandom like Fanfiction, Podfic, Fanart, Vidding, Crafting, and basic online etiquette.

It also expanded its mission statement to reflect this wider focus:[1]

Wincon is a by-the-fans, for-the-fans operation. Our goal is to provide an annual multi-fandom gathering for fans and provide a safer space for women, queer people, and under-represented fans of popular media and culture in all its infinite varieties (just like us) to come and meet, hang out, discuss their fandoms, the fic written about them, the fanart made for them, and have a good time. It’s the internet come to life. It’s a place where you can be yourself and feel comfortable in all your geeky glory. No official personnel from any show or fandom is affiliated with this convention, nor will there be any appearances by any show actors, celebrities, writers, or other personnel. It’s all about us, the fans, and the way we express ourselves and our love for fandom.[2]

In April 2011, WriterCon decided to cancel and merge into Wincon. Affectingly wrote that Wincon was sad to see Writercon suspend operations as it was actually the inspiration for Wincon in the first place.

In order to support the 2015 Wincon, a membership drive ran through an Indiegogo campaign from November 5, 2014 to January 4, 2015. The goal of $15,000 was reached with 15 hours to spare, and confirmed that the 2015 convention will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

  • Thursday Meet & Greet - Located in the Wincon Lounge room, free to Wincon attendees. Great chance for new attendees to get the lay of the land and meet new people, and for repeat attendees to reunite with old friends!
  • Thursday Outing - Depends on the city. Visit a local attraction with other early-arrivals! Tickets are separate.
  • Karaoke - Rock out with other early-arrivals! Usually happens Thursday night.
  • Live SPN Watch/SPN Rewatch - Leftover tradition from the Winchestercon days. Depending on what night Supernatural airs, there's often a gathering of fans to watch the current week's episode together.
  • Friday Night Ghost Tour - Depending on the location, there is usually an optional ghost tour that departs after the Vid Show to tour the hosting city. Tickets are separate.
  • Badfic Idol - Attendees are given a chance to write and submit short fanfics that are purposefully written badly. These stores are read aloud in front of a panel of judges who take turns critiquing it. The author who writes the "winning" badfic received a sash to wear at Winprom and a prize.
  • Winprom - Started in 2009, it's a Saturday Night Dance Party, sometimes requiring a separate ticket. Typically consists of several round tables (for sitting and conversing) circling a central dance floor, the awesome Cathybites serving as DJ, and is decorated to fit the chosen theme of that year. Light snacks are included and a cash bar is usually available. There is no set dress code - attendees often will wear anything from semi-formal dresses to elaborate costumes, however attendees are also welcome to come dressed in normal street clothes or pajamas (See Dressing for Winprom). Raffle winners are announced halfway through the prom, and the prom ends at midnight. As a tribute to the Supernatural origins of the convention, the last song is "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas, to which the attendees will sing along. Winprom often ends in group hugs and crying.
  • Straggler's Dinner - Sunday night. Location to-be-determined, but anyone who is still around is welcome to join. Pay-your-own-meal, and enjoy spending a little more time with other attendees who can't bear to say goodbye just quite yet.

  • Public Attendee List - When Wincon first started, a list of all the attendees' LiveJournal usernames was posted on the Winchestercon LJ. Due to privacy concerns and Wincon's attempt to expand and draw in attendees from sources in addition to Livejournal, this practice was discontinued in 2010.
  • Tinhat Fashion Parade/Pageant - Started in 2008, this event was repeated in 2009, 2010, and 2011. Tinfoil was provided, and attendees could create their own tinfoil hats and pose for pictures.

  • Wincon Logo - In 2008 and 2009, a logo contest was held on the Winchestercon livejournal - the winner's submission became the official logo and was available on swag in a Cafepress store (2008 Store, 2009 Store, 2010 Store). In 2010 the Wincon logo started with its customized font - including a small circle in the middle of the letter W to symbolize a person with their arms raised in the "win" or "winning" sign (similar to the emoticon "\o/"). The logo is accessorized a little bit differently each year, based on each year's theme.
  • Badges - Wincon badges are issued upon check-in with the attendee's swag bag. Badges hang on a lanyard around the neck, and are normally two-sided: one side with the attendee's online handle (usually LJ/DW name) and the other side with the name the attendee prefers to be called. This makes it easier for attendees to exchange their online handles to keep in touch (since they can just hold up their badge when asked how to spell their username). Attendees are encouraged to decorate their badges, but it is not required. Badges indicated alumni status up through 2012, after which alumni status was moved to detachable buttons. Badges are required to be worn in all convention spaces, and encouraged (but not required) to be removed when in non-convention areas of the hotel or surrounding locations.
  • Alumni - Up through Wincon 2012, previous attendees of Wincon had star stickers on their badges indicating how many previous Wincons they had attended. The stars were color-coordinated based on the theme colors for that year: 2006 was green, 2007 was purple, 2008 was red, 2009 was yellow, 2010 was pink, 2011 was blue, and 2012 was orange. Starting in 2013, buttons were made using each year's logo to indicate attendance of previous Wincons. Going forward, it is each attendee's responsibility to hold onto their buttons from previous years - only the current year's button will be available at each convention. It is encouraged but not mandatory for repeat attendees to wear all of their buttons.
  • Stickers - Every year in the Fandom Lounge, there is a table full of stickers that is available for attendees to sift through. It is traditional for attendees to decorate their badges as well as the cups from their swag bags with whatever stickers they like to make them unique and easily identifiable, including using alphabet stickers to spell their names on the cups.
  • Charity Raffle - Each year the convention supports a charity through its raffle. Individually charities were picked for the early conventions, but for the past several years the charity funds have been deposited in a Kiva account which provides microloans to low-income/underserved entrepreneurs and students in over 70 countries - as each of the loans are paid back, the money can be loaned back out again. More information about how the charity money is used can be seen on Wincon's Kiva page. The raffle items range anywhere from handmade items to official merchandise, and often include items like scarves, gloves, charm bracelets, swag from other conventions, DVDs, fandom t-shirts, tea mixes, posters, books, art drawn by Wincon attendees, as well as other fandom-centric, female-positive, and/or LGBT-positive creations. Every convention attendee gets one ticket in their swag bag, with additional tickets available to purchase for $1 each. The items are displayed throughout the convention, and the raffle winners are drawn and announced during WinProm.
  • Cards Against Humanity - First played at Dallas 2012, Cards Against Humanity has become a staple game played at Wincon every year since. The rules are easy to learn, and games often have fangirls joining in mid-round.
  • Overheard At Wincon - Traditionally, overheard snippits of weird and wacky conversations will end up on Twitter. There is no official hashtag, but most tweets contain some version of "#overheardatwincon", "#OHatWincon", "#Overheard @wincon" or similar.
  • #WinconMemories - Revived in November 2014, this hashtag was used to share memories and garner support for Wincon 2015's Indiegogo campaign.

The First Annual Winchestercon was held October 13–15, 2006 in Nashville, Tennessee. It was located at Millennium Maxwell House Hotel, 2025 MetroCenter Boulevard, Nashville, TN, 37228.

  • Approximately 250 people attended.
  • Attendee Swag: This year's swag included a welcome letter, a Human Bingo card, some plastic toys, and a bumper sticker that said, "Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole."

The Second Annual Winchestercon (called Wincon) was held October 12–14, 2007 in Los Angeles, California. It was located at Holiday Inn LAX, 9901 S La Cienega Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90045.

  • Approximately 175 people attended.
  • The official Wincon logo this year featured the iconic Impala from Supernatural.
  • Attendee Swag Bag: The tote bag was canvas with this year's Wincon logo printed on it in black, with canvas handles.
    • It included a black pen with the words "planes crash, clowns kill" written on it, Supernatural puzzles, and a flashlight with the words "salt and burn" printed on it.

Contrary to the previous year, there were no all-inclusive weekend passes and Saturday night dinner tickets available. A limited number of day passes were available for purchase on Friday and Saturday at the registration desk.

  • The two day pass cost $45 and included access to all panels on Friday and Saturday, plus Friday night Karaoke party (with complimentary drink ticket) and Con Schwag Bag.
  • The one day pass for $25 included access to all panels on day of choice, and Con Schwag Bag.
  • Two raffles were drawn featuring a range of official merchandise, fan-produced goods and two production scripts for "Heart" and "Bloodlust" signed by Sera Gamble.

The Third Annual Winchestercon (called Wincon) was held October 17–19, 2008 in Baltimore, Maryland. It was located at the Hilton, Baltimore BWI Airport, 1739 West Nursery Road, Linthicum Heights, Maryland, 21090.

  • Approximately 130 people attended.
  • The official Wincon logo this year was created by ignited, and featured the spiral from the Supernatural 3.11 episode "Mystery Spot".
  • Attendee Swag Bag: The tote bag was canvas with this year's Wincon logo printed on it in black, with black handles.

The Fourth Annual Winchestercon (called Wincon) was held October 9–11, 2009 in Denver, Colorado. It was located at Renaissance Denver Hotel, 3801 Quebec Street, Denver, Colorado 80207.

  • Approximately 80 people attended, including four from Australia, one from Thailand, one from Germany, and three from England.
  • The official Wincon logo this year was created by obssessedmuch. The design is similar to the Golden Snitch from Harry Potter, but with Supernatural details: the tendrils are reminiscent of the cloud of demons escaping hell in the season two finale two-parter "All Hell Breaks Loose", while the wings are symbolic of the angels on the other side of the apocalypse war.
  • Attendee Swag: One of the few years to not include a tote bag, this year the swag was a tin box with a label on it: "Apocalypse Survival Kit"
    • The kit included a note signed by Dean Winchester, a fun-size bag of peanut m&ms, a small pocketknife with the words "Last Resort" printed on it, a mini flashlight keychain, band-aids, a plastic rosary, and an individual serving of either whisky or tequila.
      • Dean's note reads: Soldier: First things first. If you're reading this you're fucked six ways to Sunday. No one's coming to rescue you, princess. It's just you, me, and a whole lot of demonic SOBs who want to see your insides on the outside. Pray if you want, but no one's listening anymore. In the bright side, you'll be dead soon and this'll all be over. Not that that's any real consolation considering what comes after. Hey, look, your last meal is candy! How awesome am I? The pocket knife won't do much damage, but it's better than nothing and it'll still take out an eye or rupture an artery if you get in close. Keep this on you at ALL TIMES. You've survived this long, keep up the winning streak. You can't have too many flashlights. You can kill someone about twenty different ways with that little thing, too. Fifth Annual Wincon 2010

The Fifth Annual Wincon was held October 15–17, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois. It was located at the Double Tree Chicago (Oak Brook), 1909 Spring Rd, Oak Brook, IL 60523.

  • Approximately 100 people attended.
  • This is the first year the Wincon logo started with its customized font - with a small circle in the middle of the W to symbolize a person with their arms raised in the "win" or "winning" sign (similar to the emoticon "\o/"). Also, the "o" was replaced with a star.
  • Attendee Swag Bag: The bag this year was a different design than usual - it had a single shoulder strap, and was black with the "W" from the new Wincon logo printed on it in pink, surrounded by three stars. It also came with several tiny button that said things like "Win", "Angel/Demon", and "Jerk/Bitch".
    • It included a pink star-shaped keychain and tiny buttons with the pink "W" logo on them.
  • Wincon's official colors this year were Pink and Black.
    • The Second Annual WinProm theme was Starry Night.
  • 3rd Annual Tin Hat Pageant: This year's theme is "Shipping Wars".
  • The charity this year was FINCA International.
  • The winner of Bad Fic Idol this year was tsukinofaerii with the fic Eros Fugit (Translation: Chocolate Love).

To deal with declining membership, the convention has decided to expand programming beyond the TV show Supernatural and into other media fandoms. A new convention website was set up here. Convention merchandise was sold here.[3]

Sixth Annual Wincon 2011

The Sixth Annual Wincon was held October 14–16, 2011 in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was located at the New Orleans Marriott Metairie at Lakeway, 3838 N. Causeway Boulevard, Metairie, Louisiana 70002.

  • Approximately 100 people attended.
  • The Wincon logo wore a crown over the center of the "W" and bubbles floated up from the dot on the 'i' that looks like a seahorse. The entire word has a very aquatic feel to it, reminiscent of underwater creatures and tentacles.
  • Wincon's official colors this year were Turquoise, Purple, and Blue.
    • The Third Annual WinProm theme was Under The Sea.
  • The charity raffle raised $565 for Kiva.
  • First year to have a Plushie Workshop hosted by brynspikess and laser_radiation
  • The winner of Bad Fic Idol this year was Team Lobster (wave_obscura, locknkey, beadslut, desertport, vivid_honey and CHAD!) with the fic Lobster Love Part 340/?????.

  • 6:00pm – 9:50pm - Straggler’s Dinner. For more information, check out http://wincon.livejournal.com/35467.html. After last year’s seating challenge at our Straggler’s Dinner, we’ve made arrangements to hold it at the hotel this year. We think it'll be much more convenient and since not everyone can attend, we’ve of course made it optional/not built in to the standard registration price. We’ve worked out an excellent deal with the catering manager at the hotel for a buffet style meal (yay, all you can eat!) with a menu that looks so good, it left our mouths watering when we picked it!

The Seventh Annual Wincon was held October 18–21, 2012 in Dallas, Texas. It was located at the Crowne Plaza Dallas Downtown, 1015 Elm Street, Dallas, TX 75202.

  • Approximately 100 people attended.
  • The Wincon logo wore a cowboy hat over the center of the "W" and held a lasso. Also, the dot over the "i" and the "o" were replaced with steampunk gears.
  • Attendee Swag Bag: The tote bag was yellow with the Wincon logo printed on it in orange.
    • It included a plastic cup, a pen, a bandana, a mini notebook with a random cover, tiny plastic horses, and candies in a red paisley print wrapper. It also included a bottlecap Wincon Hero pendant on either a necklace or a keychain.
  • Wincon's official colors this year were Yellow and Orange.
    • The Fourth Annual WinProm theme was Wild Wild West.
  • The charity raffle raised $2000 for Kiva.
  • Second year to have a Plushie Workshop hosted by brynspikess and laser_radiation
  • First year Cards Against Humanity was played at Wincon.

Programming items typically run 50 minutes with 10 minute breaks in between in order to allow time for participants to chat or visit the restroom, with enough time for them to make it to the next item or panel that they’d like to see. There is also an hour-long break for lunch.

Programming items are divided into tracks, Panels and Fandom Lounge, with a room dedicated to each track.

Instead, let’s talk about characterization, canon, issues of representation, RPF semiotics, smushnames, and the tour buses that drive themselves. RPF is a fandom that belongs to the participants in a very real way, and we'd like to talk about both the benefits and the responsibilities of that. The Eighth Annual Wincon was held October 10–13, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was located at the Palace Station, 2411 West Sahara Avenue Las Vegas, NV 89102.

  • Approximately 100 people attended.
  • The Wincon logo was inside the iconic "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign, and the "o" was replaced with a poker chip.
  • Attendee Swag Bag: The tote bag was red with the Wincon logo printed on it in black.
    • It included a plastic cup, a pen, beaded necklaces in the shape of dice, and a die keychain. It also included foil-wrapped chocolate "poker chips".
  • Wincon's official colors this year were Red and Black.
    • The Fifth Annual WinProm theme was Casino Royale.
  • Third year to have a Plushie Workshop hosted by brynspikess and laser_radiation
  • The proceeds of the raffle money went into Wincon's Kiva account. "As of January 2014, the Wincon account has every penny in use, which equates to just over $4000.00 loaned out to 253 individual recipients. The Ninth Annual Wincon was held October 16–19, 2014 in Orlando, Florida. It was located at the Buena Vista Suites, 8203 World Center Drive, Orlando, FL 32821.

  • Approximately 50 people attended.
  • The Wincon logo had a crown over the center of the "W".
    • On the logo used for the swag bag, cup, and pen, the "o" was replaced with a small dragon, and at the end of the word "Wincon" was a spray of five-pointed stars in differing sizes.
  • Attendee Swag Bag: The tote bag was purple with the Wincon logo printed on it in white.
    • It included a plastic cup and a pen, both also purple with the white logo. It also had a mask to wear at Winprom (optional).
  • Wincon's official colors this year were Purple and Silver.
    • The Sixth Annual WinProm theme was Fairy Tales.
  • The charity raffle raised $711 for Kiva.
  • Fourth year to have a Plushie Workshop hosted by brynspikess and laser_radiation
  • The winner of Bad Fic Idol this year was road_rhythm.

  • 10:00am – 11:00am - Book-Based Fandoms: How and How To. For fans of the Vorkosigan Saga, Young Wizards, His Dark Materials, the Hainish Cycle, Alliance-Union, or any other book or series of books. Exploring how being fannish about books differs from being a fan of a show, movie, or comic books.
  • 11:00am – 11:50am - Apocalypse/Worst Case Scenario Guide. In these ever-changing times, it's good to have a plan, or to at least start planning to have a plan. From Zombie outbreaks to more likely government collapse and shortages, we'll go over things you should be stockpiling at home, classes you should be taking (i.e. first aid and target practice), and how to find bomb and underground shelters in your area. Plus, and possibly most important of all, coping techniques for surviving if and when the internet stops working.

Tenth Annual Wincon 2015

In order to support the 2015 Wincon, a membership drive ran through an Indiegogo campaign from November 5th, 2014 to January 4th, 2015. The goal of $15,000 was reached with 15 hours to spare.

The Tenth Annual Wincon was held October 15–18, 2015 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was located at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown, 600 Commonwealth Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

  • Approximately 140 people attended.
  • The Wincon logo was done in the style of "Back to the Future".
  • Attendee Swag Bag: The drawstring backpack was black with the Wincon logo printed on it in white.
    • It included a plastic cup and a pen, both also purple with the white logo.
  • Wincon's official colors this year were Rainbow.
    • The Seventh Annual WinProm theme was Enchantment Under The Sea Dance from "Back to the Future".
  • The charity raffle raised $1204 for Kiva.
  • Fifth year to have a Plushie Workshop hosted by brynspikess and laser_radiation
  • At prom it was announced that this was to be officially the last Wincon. The event will come back in the future rebranded as CONfabulation.
