Wincon is an annual fan-run convention. It is currently run by Affectingly and Cee_M, the Co-Lead Organizers, along with a support staff of volunteers (see individual Wincon sections). Attendance usually falls between 100-200 people, and it attracts attendees from across the United States and Canada, as well as Australia, Europe and the UK. While the majority of attendees tend to be women, Wincon is not a women-only event: "We welcome people of many and varied gender identities and backgrounds, including but not limited to cis and trans women and men and other, nonbinary identities. We here at Wincon understand the complexities of gender and sexuality and do not seek to define or limit our attendees in this regard." - From the official Wincon website.

Wincon started out as Winchestercon in 2006, a Supernatural (the television show) fan con founded by Ethrosdemon and Estrella30, and was managed by Ethrosdemon and Coiledsoul from Los Angeles in 2007 through Chicago in 2010. The convention was then managed by Affectingly starting at New Orleans in 2011. Cee_M was brought on as a Co-Lead Organizer starting at Orlando in 2014.

~*~

The convention is always held around mid-October, and moves to different cities within the United States each year:
1st Annual Winchestercon - October 13-15, 2006 - Nashville, Tennessee.
2nd Annual Winchestercon - October 12-13, 2007 - Los Angeles, California.
3rd Annual Winchestercon - October 17-19, 2008 - Baltimore, Maryland.
4th Annual Winchestercon - October 9-11, 2009 - Denver, Colorado.
5th Annual Wincon - October 15-17, 2010 - Chicago, Illinois.
6th Annual Wincon - October 14-16, 2011 - New Orleans, Louisiana
7th Annual Wincon - October 18-21, 2012 - Dallas, Texas.
8th Annual Wincon - October 10-13, 2013 - Las Vegas, Nevada.
9th Annual Wincon - October 16-19, 2014 - Orlando, Florida.
10th Annual Wincon - October 2015 - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The convention officially starts on Friday and ends on Sunday. Some attendees arrive as early as Wednesday and leave as late as Monday - Because of this, there is usually a Meet & Greet sometime Thursday evening, and a Straggler's Dinner on Sunday night.

From 2006-2009 it was specifically focused on the Supernatural fandom. It featured panels discussing aspects of TV show and the fandom, big screen viewings of recent episodes, a fan vid show, and a lot of socializing. The emphasis is to celebrate the creative aspects of fandom, and the culture of online fandom.

In 2010, the convention expanded to include other fandoms and it is now a multi-fandom convention. It also expanded its mission statement to reflect this wider focus:[1]

Wincon is a by-the-fans, for-the-fans operation. Our goal is to provide an annual multi-fandom gathering for fans and provide a safer space for women, queer people, and under-represented fans of popular media and culture in all its infinite varieties (just like us) to come and meet, hang out, discuss their fandoms, the fic written about them, the fanart made for them, and have a good time. It’s the internet come to life. It’s a place where you can be yourself and feel comfortable in all your geeky glory. No official personnel from any show or fandom is affiliated with this convention, nor will there be any appearances by any show actors, celebrities, writers, or other personnel. It’s all about us, the fans, and the way we express ourselves and our love for fandom.[2]

~*~

In order to support the 2015 Wincon, a membership drive will run through an Indiegogo campaign (link coming soon!) from November 5th, 2014 to January 5th, 2015. If the goal of $15,000 is reached, then the 2015 convention will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. If the goal is not reached, all pledges will be refunded by Indiegogo and the convention will be cancelled.

Wincon Customs

  • Wincon Logo - In 2010 the Wincon logo started with its customized font - including a small circle in the middle of the letter W to symbolize a person with their arms raised in the "win" or "winning" sign (similar to the emoticon "\o/"). The logo is accessorized a little bit differently each year, based on each year's theme.
  • Badges - Wincon badges are issued upon check-in with the attendee's swag bag. Badges hang on a lanyard around the neck, and are normally two-sided: one side with the attendee's online handle (usually LJ/DW name) and the other side with the name the attendee prefers to be called. This makes it easier for attendees to exchange their online handles to keep in touch (since they can just hold up their badge when asked how to spell their username). Attendees are encouraged to decorate their badges, but it is not required. Badges indicated alumni status up through 2012, after which alumni status was moved to detachable buttons. Badges are required to be worn in all convention spaces, and encouraged (but not required) to be removed when in non-convention areas of the hotel or surrounding locations.
  • Alumni - Up through Wincon 2012, previous attendees of Wincon had star stickers on their badges indicating how many previous Wincons they had attended. The stars were color-coordinated based on the theme colors for that year: 2006 was green, 2007 was purple, 2008 was red, 2009 was yellow, 2010 was pink, 2011 was blue, and 2012 was orange. Starting in 2013, buttons were made using each year's logo to indicate attendance of previous Wincons. Going forward, it is each attendee's responsibility to hold onto their buttons from previous years - only the current year's button will be avalible at each convention. It is encouraged but not mandatory for repeat attendees to wear all of their buttons.
  • Stickers - Every year in the Fandom Lounge, there is a table full of stickers that is available for attendees to sift through. It is traditional for attendees to decorate their badges as well as the cups from their swag bags with whatever stickers they like to make them unique and easily identifiable, including using alphabet stickers to spell their names on the cups.
  • Badfic Idol - A Wincon tradition! Attendees are given a chance to write and submit short fanfics that are purposfully written badly. These stores are read aloud in front of a panel of judges who take turns critiquing it. The author who writes the "winning" badfic recieved a sash to wear at Winprom and a prize.
  • Winprom - Saturday Night Dance Party, sometimes requiring a seperate ticket. Typically consists of several round tables (for sitting and conversing) circling a central dance floor, the awesome Cathybites serving as DJ, and is decorated to fit the chosen theme of that year. Light snacks are included and a cash bar is usually avaliable. There is no set dress code - attendees often will wear anything from semi-formal dresses to elaborate costumes, however attendees are also welcome to come dressed in normal street clothes or pajamas. Raffle winners are announced halfway through the prom, and the prom ends at midnight. As a tribute to the Supernatural origins of the convention, the last song is "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas, to which the attendees will sing along. Winprom often ends in group hugs and crying.
  • Charity Raffle - Each year the convention supports a Kiva Account through its raffle. More information about how the charity money is used can be seen on Wincon's Kiva page. The raffle items range anywhere from handmade items to official merchandise, and often include items like scarves, gloves, charm bracelets, swag from other conventions, DVDs, fandom t-shirts, tea mixes, posters, books, art drawn by Wincon attendees, as well as other fandom-centric, female-positive, and/or LGBT-positive creations. Every convention attendee gets one ticket in their swag bag, with additional tickets available to purchase. The items are displayed throughout the convention, and the raffle winners are drawn and announced during WinProm.

2011 Panels/Programming

Friday

  • Men/Women in Uniform: Uniforms are present in fandoms as distinct as Stargate: Atlantis, Harry Potter, and football RPF. Indeed, the trope is so pervasive, it has spawned an entire sub-genre of AUs (from boarding school dormitories to military barracks) created just to see our favorite characters dressed alike. What is it about uniforms that are so attractive? What do uniforms add to a story or scene? The Uniform panel seeks to answer these questions and more, complete with audience participation and visual aids!
  • Comics Fandom /Marvel Universe: Squeeze in some heated discussion about your favorite comic, give your two-cents on the explosion of Marvel-verse over the summer, and be prepared to take the party to the Roadhouse when you run out of time to discuss ALL the alternate timelines and parallel Earths.
  • Fan Art: Be it digital or traditional, the delicate science of the perfect .gif or MS Paint stick figure comics - we wanna talk about it and where fan art is headed as fandom platforms evolve.
  • How to Host a Challenge/Community/Kink Meme: Is your new fandom too quiet? Do you have a hankering for a Zombie apocalypse challenge and not a one in sight? Never fear. The queens of fandom participation will teach you their tricks.
  • SPN Replay: Replay of the October 7th episode of Supernatural.
  • Vid Show
  • Wincon Roadhouse: Comp drinks and snacks abound! Vid show replay and episode marathons will be happening throughout the weekend at the roadhouse this year. A separate schedule of events for this room will be posted closer to the con.

Saturday

  • RPF Panel: RPF - Real People as Fictional Characters: Off-limits or all’s fair - why do you read it/write it/ ship it?
  • Lawyers!: Why do we love shows about lawyers so much? It’s not just the suits or the cocky attitudes or even the way they look when the suits come off... but those things sure as hell don’t hurt.
  • Pimp Your Fandom: Do you feel the need to open the hearts and minds of fan girls to your fandom? Do you have the tools? The guts? Then sign up here for a ten minute pitch to dazzle and initiate the audience to your flavor of the day/month/year/decade. Props encouraged.
  • Writing Beyond Trope: Poly, Kink and Taboo: Do you sometimes want to write/read something outside your norm? Do some warnings scare (and intrigue) you? Let’s discuss getting it right, making it interesting and discovering something new!
  • International Bad Fic Idol: Be prepared to laugh yourself to death as we read the crackiest of crack fic known to fandom, then judge it. Not that we’re judgmental or anything. Well, maybe the mental part.
  • Romance Panel: What do bodice-ripping highlanders, arranged marriages, and werewolf/vampire/shapeshifting soulmates have in common? Romance, of course! Be it fanfic or pro, het or slash, what makes for good romance? Tropes we love, hate, and hate to love, so long as everyone lives happily ever after.
  • Wincon Roadhouse: Comp drinks and snacks abound! Vid show replay and episode marathons will be happening throughout the weekend at the roadhouse this year. A separate schedule of events for this room will be posted closer to the con.
  • Winprom: Theme: Under the Sea: The power of Cthulhu compels you to eat, drink and dance with your fellow fangirls! Costumes welcome but not mandatory. The raffle will take place during the prom and you must be present to win, so if you have to come downstairs in your jammies to be there, we won’t mind!

Sunday

  • Internet Panel: Navigating fandom on the internet.
  • Closing Ceremonies: Come say bye and hear what’s in store for Wincon 2012. Bring your hankies and your hugs.
  • Wincon Roadhouse: The Roadhouse will become our departure point on Sunday. Need a place to park your bags while you wait for your shuttle? This is the place. Come say your goodbyes and search the lost and found for your missing undergarments.
  • Straggler’s Dinner

2012 Panels/Programming

cover of the 2012 Wincon program book

Programming items typically run 50 minutes with 10 minute breaks in between in order to allow time for participants to chat or visit the restroom, with enough time for them to make it to the next item or panel that they’d like to see. There is also an hour-long break for lunch.

Programming items are divided into tracks, Panels and Fandom Lounge, with a room dedicated to each track.

Thursday, October 14th

  • 5:00pm - 12:00am - Meet & Greet and Karaoke! Roadhouse & Fandom Lounge. Come meet your fellow attendees, have some snacks, do crafts, get your nails done, and maybe even sing a little! It’s going to awesome.

Friday, October 15th
Friday Panel Programming:

  • 11:00am - 11:50am - Comics: Heroes in Tights. Comic book superheroes have been an institution for decades, and they’re taking off in popularity again thanks to recent smashes at the box office. We’ll discuss the Big Two (Marvel and DC), classic comics, modern comics, TV shows, movies, and more. HOST: clex_monkie89 PANELISTS: tsukinofaerii, celtic_cookie, & waterofthemoon
  • 12:00pm - 12:50pm - Live Beta Writing Workshop. Ever wish you could get irl feedback on your fanfic? Bring 2-3 rough pages and sit down for some reading and reviewing. We will break into groups, read aloud our work, and offer and accept constructive criticism. An excellent opportunity for fic-storming and creative collaboration! Make sure to bring at least five copies so everyone can read along with you. HOST: desertport
  • 2:00pm - 2:50pm - Femslash. Why two vaginas are better than one! Or: a discussion of femslash in a wider fandom context, including the challenges of being a femslash shipper in male-slash dominated fandoms in male-character dominated Western fandom; and why we ship, how we ship, and who we ship. MODERATOR: lazy_daze PANELISTS: cherie_morte, lesson_in_love & nickelmountain
  • 3:00pm - 3:50pm - Fairy Tales Redux. Once Upon a Time, Snow White & the Huntsman, Grimm, Other Stuff. What makes a fairytale so timeless? Why do we come back to the same stories again and again? What’s the fascination in retelling and reimagining them? PANELISTS: sparkymonster, loveflyfree, & tsuki_no_bara
  • 4:00pm - 4:50pm - Real Person Fiction (Serving Up Slashy Goodness). An RPF panel is a Wincon tradition, but this year we’d like to have a slightly different discussion. If you’re coming to this panel, you probably don’t need or want to rehash the “This is why RPF isn’t creepy! No really!” territory. Instead, let’s talk about characterization, canon, issues of representation, RPF semiotics, smushnames, and the tour buses that drive themselves. RPF is a fandom that belongs to the participants in a very real way, and we’d like to talk about both the benefits and the responsibilities of that. With great power, after all, comes great responsibility. PANELISTS: sophie_448, celtic_cookie, starlightstorm, cee_m & rivers_bend

Friday Fandom Lounge:

How is incest treated in your fandom? How do you write it? (Normalized? As a kink? As abuse?) Are there lines you don’t feel comfortable crossing, or do the norms of the fandom dictate what you feel okay about writing or reading? And if you just want to come reminisce about the glory days of Weasleycest and your early exposure to Flowers in the Attic, that’s fine too! PANELISTS: beckaandzac, sophie448, and wutendeskind
  • 11:30am - 12:20pm - Fandom and the Fourth Wall. Come discuss the evolving concept of the fourth wall between fandom and TPTB of our fandoms. • 12:30pm - 1:20pm - And Then I Started Watching Teen Wolf. It’s this MTV show about werewolves based on an 80s movie. Just a little harmless fun, right? Then it’s three days later, you’ve marathoned both seasons, and you’re swimming in a pool of your own tears because of all the FEELS you have about this STUPID SHOW ABOUT WEREWOLVES. You’re ranting at the internet like a crazy person, but don’t worry. The internet knows that feel, bro. Welcome to Teen Wolf fandom. Enjoy your stay! • 4:00pm - 4:50pm - Super Nostalgia. The Supernatural Panel! Relive the pilot ep and then a discussion of Sam, Dean, John, Bobby, Angels, Devils and everyone else that’s been in the Impala over the year! PANELISTS: wendy, deirdre_c, girlguidejones, & gekizetsu
  • 5:00pm - 6:00pm - Bad Fic Idol. The tradition continues: Take some bad fic written especially for the event read out loud, throw in some hilarious judges and a most excellent hostess and you’ll have a cracktacular good time. A wide-ranging discussion structured around the flower crown meme, covering some of the more popular fandoms that use the meme (1D, Hannibal, WtNV), how fandom is performed on tumblr, and the increasing transparency of the 4th wall as Hugh Dancy, Bryan Fuller, Cecil Baldwin, & many others don the flower crown and celebrate our fandoms with us.
  • 11:00am - 11:50am - Podfic!: An Appreciation of Sounds and Readers. A podfic appreciation panel for fans & creators of podfic. Discussion may include the past, present, & future of podfic, how podficcers choose fic to podfic, how listeners choose podfics to download, issues surrounding author permission and transformative works policies, issues surrounding feedback, the impact of cover art, & lots & lots of squee.
  • 12:00pm - 12:50pm - User Interface: Fannish Gamers. Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, and World of Warcraft and why we love these animated pixels so much. How we got into gaming? Console vs computer (or both)? What it's like not fitting the stereotypical "gamer" mold.
  • 1:00pm - 1:50pm - LUNCH BREAK
  • 2:00pm - 2:50pm - We Invented the Remix: A Popslash Retrospective. Discussion about the popslash fandom of the late 90s/early 00s and its impact on fandom as we know it today.
  • 3:00pm - 3:50pm - Fandom Reboots. Quite a few fandoms getting reboots these days. What do you know about the proposed Stargate trilogy? What would we like to see in a Highlander reboot?
  • 4:00pm - 4:50pm - Hockey: Life After the Lockout. Come talk hockey/hockey RPF! The lockout and the ways it allowed fandom to grow exponentially; becoming a fan of a perpetually bottom-dwelling team; reading fic of a team you don't root for and/or liking players on teams you root against; mainstream hockey fandom's issues with race, class, and gender and how that changes the ways in which we engage with fandom; the Olympics; the trade deadline; shifting team allegiances; and other topics that come to mind!
  • 5:00pm - 6:00pm - OPEN

Sunday, October 19th
Sunday Panels:

  • 10:00am - 11:00am - Things That Go Squee in the Night: Horror TV. Discussion of horror TV shows, such as American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, Grimm, Sleepy Hollow, etc (SPN discussion is welcome, but we will be focusing on other shows.)

  • 12:00pm - 12:50pm - CLOSING CEREMONIES. Goodbye, so long... at least until next year.

Sunday Roundtables:

  • 10:00am - 11:00am - Book-Based Fandoms: How and How To. For fans of the Vorkosigan Saga, Young Wizards, His Dark Materials, the Hainish Cycle, Alliance-Union, or any other book or series of books. Exploring how being fannish about books differs from being a fan of a show, movie, or comic books.
  • 11:00am - 11:50am - Apocalypse/Worst Case Scenario Guide. In these ever-changing times, it's good to have a plan, or to at least start planning to have a plan. From Zombie outbreaks to more likely government collapse and shortages, we'll go over things you should be stockpiling at home, classes you should be taking (i.e. first aid and target practice), and how to find bomb and underground shelters in your area. Plus, and possibly most important of all, coping techniques for surviving if and when the internet stops working.

Tenth Annual Wincon 2015

As mentioned above: in order to support the 2015 Wincon, a membership drive will run through an Indiegogo campaign (link coming soon!) from November 5th, 2014 to January 5th, 2015. If the goal of $15,000 is reached, then the 2015 convention will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. If the goal is not reached, all pledges will be refunded by Indiegogo and the convention will be cancelled.

  • The WinProm theme (if we reach our goal by Jan 5th and Wincon continues) will be Back To The Future.

  1. The original mission statement read: "Wincon is a by the fans, for the fans operation. Our goal is to provide an annual gathering for SPN fans (focused around the livejournal community but certainly anyone can come, we aren't too picky) to come and meet, hang out, discuss the show and the fic written about it, party and have a good time. In other words, a giant slumber party where we can all do the fannish things we do online in person and in our pajamas. No one from the show is affiliated with this convention, nor will there be any appearances by any show actors, writers, or other personnel. From the original Wincon LJ Profile.
