Your Inevitable Unhappy Ending by helenish is SGA John/Rodney, taking off and running through a couple of years in it's own timeline. And it hits a lot of my kinks: awkward sex, misunderstandings in some cases due to deliberately saying what they don't mean, great psychological complexity about why this relationship is different, Rodney having to be the non-screwed up one of the two, nice depth of character in the rest of the ensemble, including Elizabeth in particular, and Miko. It's also well written and the characters are really interesting takes on the canon guys. I rec highly. [1]
2006
This is Helen's first SGA fic, but many people know her from other fandoms, including Sentinel. This particular story is well written, with a believable premise and an emotionally compelling conflict that draws the reader in. She keeps John and Rodney real, somewhat effed up, and utterly sympathetic. She also manages to flesh out the background characters so that no one really feels like they're there just to support the scenery. In other words, she knows what makes the SGA crew tick, and transposes it into a "what if?" situation without losing anyone along the way. In addition to that, her writing is emotional without being OTT or maudlin, humourous without being slapstick, and hot without being spuriously pornographic. It all has depth and context and it's just ... damn it, it's good. [2]
This is THE story, for me. One I've read don't know how many times, and still coming back to it. It has everything: it's funny and sad and everyone is so in-character that it physically hurts to read some times. I can count on one hand the number of SGA stories when the L word from either Sheppard or McKay doesn't make you feel uncomfortable and this would be the numero uno. [3]
I have no idea how I missed this story on the first go-round because I’m about 7 months late now, but anyways, perhaps there are still some people who haven’t read this either. I should preface with the fact that I do not always love Helen’s writing. I often find her style to be a little to sparse for my tastes. This story, however, breaks the pattern in fabulous ways. It’s complex, and just slightly painful, and very subtly character driven and I adore it. Also, the title is wonderfully misleading. [4]

helenish's writing might take a while to get used to. It's very spare - it reminds me a lot of Hemingway, and I mean that as a complement. I love her stuff, it's very different, and her characterization of John in particular is always great. (She also wrote the very first Ron/Draco fic I ever read, yeeeeeears ago. Weird, huh?) Anyway, this is my favorite of her SGA fics. [5]

John falls in love and Rodney uses a baby to get women. Only so much better than that sounds. [6]
