Ariana/Giovanni, known mostly as YakuzaShipping and/or サカアテ (Sakaate), is a common ship in the Pokémon fandom. It pairs Ariana (Athena) and Giovanni (Sakaki), both highly ranked members of the villainous Team Rocket, with Giovanni as the leader. Giovanni comes from Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow while Ariana wouldn't be named until Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver in 2009, which remade the original Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal games.

Canon Background

Popular Tropes & Fanon

  • Silver: many fans believe Ariana is Silver's mother, as they both have red hair. Canonically, Silver's mother goes unspecified.
  • Mars: might also be headcanoned as their daughter since she has red hair and ties to a villainous Pokemon team, Team Galactic.
  • Fankids: common both for canon and fanon characters.

-Shipping Name Origin

SilverSpawnShipping was coined first, sometime shortly before 29 November 2009.[1] "YakuzaShipping" was originally the ship name for Falkner and Honchcrow[Notes 1], coined sometime shortly before 28 December 2009[2], before later being adopted as an alternative name since it doesn't imply Ariana is Silver's mother or that she "spawned" him, in the 2010s. This name is used much more often by actual shippers.

'Yakuza' comes from Team Rocket being inspired off of real-life Yakuza.
