Winter Rose is a Kirk/Spock story by Robin Hood.
It was published in the print zine Counterpoint #5.
Summary
"Kirk tries to explain to Spock why he goes to the trouble he does to keep one particular plant alive, and who the plant symbolizes."
Reactions and Reviews
Inspired by the poem "Winter Rose", credited to a K/S Songtape, this very short piece contains some exceptionally realistic Kirk/Spock dialogue. The two are retired now, and Spock alternates between concern about Kirk's imminent thought not yet evident aging (I hate those) and exasperation at his mate's concern for a potted plant on their balcony. My favorite exchange is this; "Kirk laughed. "I love you," he chortled, reaching out to touch the lined face and then leaned close to brush his lips against the stern-looking visage, "Yes, old Steel-hide, I love you and you love to hear me say it….?" Isn't that just the most perfect endearment you ever heard for Spock? "Old Steel-hide", indeed. [1]
