Reactions and Reviews
This story was written for the K/S 2010 Advent Calendar and in her footnote, the author states that she always wanted to "fix" the movie "Generations" and felt this was a good opportunity to do so. For me, however, the plot seems more a continuation of "The Undiscovered Country", a movie I personally feel needs some "fixing". Regardless, the author once again does an incredible job of bringing these two most unique characters to life and that is something that does not need any "fixing" at all. This story takes place on which is, by Earth standards, the eve of the New Year. Kirk and Spock are attendees at a diplomatic function, designed to continue the efforts begun by Spock in ST VI to bring Klingons and humans together. Kirk is a reluctant attendee, not only due to the presence of so many Klingons, but also because Spock‘s diplomatic duties have been keeping them apart for far too long. Still, a brief meeting with Amanda helps to ease his mind and when he and Spock finally find time to be alone together, Kirk finds himself looking forward to the future they are building together.
This story reminds me of another of my favorite stories by this author, by the name of "Risk". Not because the two have anything in common as far as plot goes, but because both are relatively short. Yet despite the fact each is only a few pages, that does not take away the impact they have on the reader. This author does a marvelous job in proving a story doesn‘t need to be long to be good, and that it is very possible to say so much with so little. It is just one of the many reasons why she remains one of my all-time favorite K/S authors. [1]
