They also need to learn how to work together! chapter 5: "The Goat Who Laid the Golden Egg Story" — A landing party is needed for a straightforward rescue mission of some stranded scientists. My series, “When All Else Fails,” was set after ST:TMP – thus the odd uniforms – but before ST:WOK. Chekov is a first officer. And, as you can see from the illustrations, back in 1990, before ST:VOY was a twinkle in Kate Mulgrew’s eye, it featured a female captain who wore her hair in bun. Other than that, no resemblance whatsoever. WAEF was I guess what you would call parody series. I’m hesitant to use that term primarily because most other parody series I know of function on the level of “Captain Quirk and Mr. Spot.” WAEF is really dry, sarcastic stuff. Bill Hupe said it reminded him of the Blackadder series – and then was amazed I’d never seen Blackadder and promptly sent me the entire run for which I am eternally grateful. Come to think of it, the only people who’ve ever said good things to me about the series are British comedy fans.

Well, be that as it may, I was only six chapters in and IDR folded. You can see the little WAEF logo optimistically proclaiming “To Be Continued” right above Marguerite’s announcement that this would be the last issue of IDR. There was one more issue with a different editor, but that was kind of an odd, scatter-shot affair. I didn’t have more WAEF chapters ready to run for IDR 31, so I submitted a story that was what you might call a “backstory” about one of my original characters that I did have art for and waited to see if there would be an IDR #32. And there wasn’t. And we were all sad. [1]
